[2016-7-16. : 10:24 pm] Dem0n -- FaRTy1billionFaRTy1billion shouted: Oh god, these aren't even the first-level classes. D: There's one lower that's "technology’s impact on society, hardware, SOHO networking, threats, Google as a verb, ethics/policy, file management, standards, disaster recovery & remote computing. " That sounds like a special topics class meant for non-CS majors[2016-7-16. : 10:14 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I definitely need to speak to someone at the school to see what I can do[2016-7-16. : 10:12 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- can I just be like "I have used a computer before." and get out of this class? "[2016-7-16. : 9:46 pm] Dem0n -- Like I learned about quadtrees and avl trees and random shit that I'll never use[2016-7-16. : 9:46 pm] Dem0n -- FaRTy1billionFaRTy1billion shouted: I'm most familiar with linked lists and stacks. I haven't directly dealt with queues (other than winapi message queue), but I understand how it works (similar to a stack, I would say). I'm familiar with hash tables from dealing with MPQs. I'm not totally sure what specifically constitutes a tree, but I've dealt with multiple layers of linked lists with child lists which I would call a tree (like a treeview). I haven't done much directly with like searching (I've never done like BSTs and stuff) and sorts (other than extremely rudimentary ones) because I usually just use qsort In my experience, you learn all that in the intro OOP classes. The data structures class teaches you about like abstract structures that nobody uses LMAO![]() [2016-7-16. : 9:45 pm] Moose -- Dem0nDem0n shouted: "The lucky kids of JavaSchools are never going to get weird segfaults trying to implement pointer-based hash tables." Too bad I did that, Moose, so you're dumb LMAO Did you do it in Java tho?[2016-7-16. : 9:45 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- So definitely a lot of stuff in that class I'm not sure about, which is why I was interested in it (but it has the prereqs of the OOP and fundamentals class )[2016-7-16. : 9:44 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I'm most familiar with linked lists and stacks. You won't be able to appreciate a lot of it.[2016-7-16. : 9:43 pm] lil-Inferno -- Mini Moose 2707Mini Moose 2707 shouted: Just read Effective Java and Java Practices or something, probably get more out of that than some of the courses LMAO I wouldn't read the former book unless you already have a solid grasp of the language TBH[2016-7-16. : 9:38 pm] Moose -- It's a lot better now. A lot of people still bitch about Java, though. Probably haven't used it since 1.1 LMAO[2016-7-16. : 9:38 pm] Moose -- TBH, Java was pretty awful at its beginning. And that was on less powerful computers. Terrible combo.[2016-7-16. : 9:37 pm] Dem0n -- people bitching about java not being efficient as other languages or w/e[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm] Dem0n -- why the fuck would I want to use some retarded language when I don't have to LMAO[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm] Moose -- Dem0nDem0n shouted: Most data structures courses are in Java I think http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/ThePerilsofJavaSchools.html imo[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkureCecilSunkure shouted: Which of those data structures were you not already familiar with? Of your code, or the ones I listed from the course description?[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I have used C++, it's just 99% of the time I find it unnecessary and stick to C[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm] CecilSunkure -- Which of those data structures were you not already familiar with?[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Mini Moose 2707Mini Moose 2707 shouted: FaRTy1billion Too bad, you have to use the new operator now. Embrace C++ instead of the better subset of it known as C LMAO I'm also familiar with new ![]() [2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm] CecilSunkure -- FaRTy1billionFaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure CecilSunkure ya, I've done stuff like that then your data structure class will be pretty easy[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm] Moose -- Dem0nDem0n shouted: Most data structures courses are in Java I think Only if your school is weak probs[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkureCecilSunkure shouted: So memory management things CecilSunkureCecilSunkure shouted: Or like implementing a vector that uses malloc/free ya, I've done stuff like that[2016-7-16. : 9:32 pm] Moose -- FaRTy1billionFaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure I meant because in C that's all you have, and I use it extensively Too bad, you have to use the new operator now. Let me link you some of my source I meant because in C that's all you have, and I use it extensively[2016-7-16. : 9:31 pm] CecilSunkure -- FaRTy1billionFaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure Like malloc and stuff? Because I use C mostly. Yeah exactly, malloc and free. So like... This is "data structures (stacks, queues, linked lists, heaps, hash tables, trees, graphs); Java Collections framework; algorithmic analysis (Big O, profiling); and common algorithms (recursion, searching, sorting, traversals). " No, my algorithm class was like, "You have two heaps and you want to merge them into one. Write an algorithm to do so. (25 points)" And if it's not efficient based on the professor's standards, you get 0 points[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm] CecilSunkure -- I would really recommend also making those data structures in C++ as well[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkureCecilSunkure shouted: That data structure class looks good I was interested in it, because I'm familiar with some of that stuff but definitely not all of it[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Dem0nDem0n shouted: Or Android, which is like one of the biggest things nowadays. And it pays fat $tack$ Does it? I thought it was starting to oversaturate[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm] Dem0n -- Or Android, which is like one of the biggest things nowadays.
