Dem0n -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: Oh god, these aren't even the first-level classes. D: There's one lower that's "technology’s impact on society, hardware, SOHO networking, threats, Google as a verb, ethics/policy, file management, standards, disaster recovery & remote computing. "
That sounds like a special topics class meant for non-CS majors
[2016-7-16. : 10:14 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I definitely need to speak to someone at the school to see what I can do
[2016-7-16. : 10:12 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- can I just be like "I have used a computer before." and get out of this class? D:
[2016-7-16. : 10:10 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I think that's covered in "ethics"
[2016-7-16. : 10:10 pm]
Moose -- Such as tabs versus spaces.
[2016-7-16. : 10:10 pm]
Moose -- They really should focus on the more important content.
[2016-7-16. : 10:09 pm]

[2016-7-16. : 9:47 pm]
lil-Inferno -- Swing is like a UI tool kit I think.
[2016-7-16. : 9:47 pm]
Moose -- Need to find someone that worked on AWT XDDDDDDD
[2016-7-16. : 9:47 pm]
Moose -- The thing before JavaFX
[2016-7-16. : 9:47 pm]
Dem0n -- the fuck is Swing LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:46 pm]
lil-Inferno -- O, I know someone that worked on Swing LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:46 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- this OOP says "Essentials of object oriented programming in Java: creating classes, data validation, generics, packages, exception handling, unit testing, inheritance, , polymorphism, file handling, basic Swing, and a subset of the Java API are covered. "
[2016-7-16. : 9:46 pm]
Dem0n -- Like I learned about quadtrees and avl trees and random shit that I'll never use
[2016-7-16. : 9:46 pm]
Dem0n -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: I'm most familiar with linked lists and stacks. I haven't directly dealt with queues (other than winapi message queue), but I understand how it works (similar to a stack, I would say). I'm familiar with hash tables from dealing with MPQs. I'm not totally sure what specifically constitutes a tree, but I've dealt with multiple layers of linked lists with child lists which I would call a tree (like a treeview). I haven't done much directly with like searching (I've never done like BSTs and stuff) and sorts (other than extremely rudimentary ones) because I usually just use qsort :P
In my experience, you learn all that in the intro OOP classes. The data structures class teaches you about like abstract structures that nobody uses LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:45 pm]
Dem0n -- no
[2016-7-16. : 9:45 pm]
Moose -- Dem0n
Dem0n shouted: "The lucky kids of JavaSchools are never going to get weird segfaults trying to implement pointer-based hash tables." Too bad I did that, Moose, so you're dumb LMAO
Did you do it in Java tho?
[2016-7-16. : 9:45 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- So definitely a lot of stuff in that class I'm not sure about, which is why I was interested in it (but it has the prereqs of the OOP and fundamentals class :/)
[2016-7-16. : 9:44 pm]

Dem0n -- "The lucky kids of JavaSchools are never going to get weird segfaults trying to implement pointer-based hash tables." Too bad I did that, Moose, so you're dumb LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:43 pm]
Moose -- It's not really an introductory text.
[2016-7-16. : 9:43 pm]
Moose -- lil-Inferno
lil-Inferno shouted: Mini Moose 2707 I wouldn't read the former book unless you already have a solid grasp of the language TBH
Yeah, I actually agree. You won't be able to appreciate a lot of it.
[2016-7-16. : 9:43 pm]
lil-Inferno -- Mini Moose 2707
Mini Moose 2707 shouted: Just read Effective Java and Java Practices or something, probably get more out of that than some of the courses LMAO
I wouldn't read the former book unless you already have a solid grasp of the language TBH
[2016-7-16. : 9:38 pm]
Moose -- It's a lot better now. A lot of people still bitch about Java, though. Probably haven't used it since 1.1 LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:38 pm]
Moose -- TBH, Java was pretty awful at its beginning. And that was on less powerful computers. Terrible combo.
[2016-7-16. : 9:37 pm]
Dem0n -- acting like computers still have 1 mb of memory on them
[2016-7-16. : 9:37 pm]
Dem0n -- people bitching about java not being efficient as other languages or w/e
[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm]
Moose -- LISP adult AF, so adult I don't even know it. Boutta install it LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm]
Dem0n -- shut the fuck up
[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm]
Dem0n -- okay
[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm]
Dem0n -- niggas bitching like "omg I had to use Scheme"
[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm]
Dem0n -- why the fuck would I want to use some retarded language when I don't have to LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:36 pm]
Dem0n -- like
[2016-7-16. : 9:35 pm]
Moose -- It was 2005, so maybe Java's was still terrible LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:35 pm]
Moose -- Yeah, TBH garbage collection has caught up
[2016-7-16. : 9:35 pm]
Dem0n -- stfu
[2016-7-16. : 9:35 pm]
Dem0n -- "omg kids these days have garbage collection"
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
CecilSunkure -- The description
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
Dem0n -- w/e
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
Moose -- Dem0n
Dem0n shouted: Most data structures courses are in Java I think
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/ThePerilsofJavaSchools.html imo
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkure
CecilSunkure shouted: Which of those data structures were you not already familiar with?
Of your code, or the ones I listed from the course description?
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I have used C++, it's just 99% of the time I find it unnecessary and stick to C
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
CecilSunkure -- I'm just curious
[2016-7-16. : 9:34 pm]
CecilSunkure -- Which of those data structures were you not already familiar with?
[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Mini Moose 2707
Mini Moose 2707 shouted: FaRTy1billion Too bad, you have to use the new operator now. Embrace C++ instead of the better subset of it known as C LMAO
I'm also familiar with new :P
[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm]
CecilSunkure -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure CecilSunkure ya, I've done stuff like that
then your data structure class will be pretty easy
[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm]
Moose -- Dem0n
Dem0n shouted: Most data structures courses are in Java I think
Only if your school is weak probs
[2016-7-16. : 9:33 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkure
CecilSunkure shouted: So memory management things
CecilSunkure
CecilSunkure shouted: Or like implementing a vector that uses malloc/free
ya, I've done stuff like that
[2016-7-16. : 9:32 pm]
Dem0n -- Most data structures courses are in Java I think
[2016-7-16. : 9:32 pm]
Moose -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure I meant because in C that's all you have, and I use it extensively
Too bad, you have to use the new operator now. Embrace C++ instead of the better subset of it known as C LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:32 pm]
CecilSunkure -- Or like implementing a vector that uses malloc/free
[2016-7-16. : 9:32 pm]
CecilSunkure -- So memory management things
[2016-7-16. : 9:31 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkure
CecilSunkure shouted: FaRTy1billion Yeah exactly, malloc and free. So like... Let me link you some of my source
I meant because in C that's all you have, and I use it extensively
[2016-7-16. : 9:31 pm]
CecilSunkure -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure Like malloc and stuff? Because I use C mostly. :P
Yeah exactly, malloc and free. So like... Let me link you some of my source
[2016-7-16. : 9:30 pm]
Moose -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: CecilSunkure Like malloc and stuff? Because I use C mostly. :P
Too bad, you have to use the new operator now
[2016-7-16. : 9:30 pm]
Dem0n -- like IDK ROFL
[2016-7-16. : 9:30 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkure
CecilSunkure shouted: so you can get used to explicit memory management
Like malloc and stuff? Because I use C mostly. :P
[2016-7-16. : 9:30 pm]
Dem0n -- "How many comparisons does quicksort make on average?"
[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- ya, it wouldn't be hard
[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm]
Moose -- Just read Effective Java and Java Practices or something, probably get more out of that than some of the courses LMAO
[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm]
Dem0n -- FaRTy1billion
FaRTy1billion shouted: was your algorithms class a basic one? This is "data structures (stacks, queues, linked lists, heaps, hash tables, trees, graphs); Java Collections framework; algorithmic analysis (Big O, profiling); and common algorithms (recursion, searching, sorting, traversals). "
No, my algorithm class was like, "You have two heaps and you want to merge them into one. Write an algorithm to do so. (25 points)" And if it's not efficient based on the professor's standards, you get 0 points
[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm]
CecilSunkure -- so you can get used to explicit memory management
[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm]
CecilSunkure -- I would really recommend also making those data structures in C++ as well
[2016-7-16. : 9:29 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- CecilSunkure
CecilSunkure shouted: That data structure class looks good
I was interested in it, because I'm familiar with some of that stuff but definitely not all of it
[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm]
CecilSunkure -- take it
[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Dem0n
Dem0n shouted: Or Android, which is like one of the biggest things nowadays. And it pays fat $tack$
Does it? I thought it was starting to oversaturate
[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm]
CecilSunkure -- That data structure class looks good
[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm]
Dem0n -- Or Android, which is like one of the biggest things nowadays. And it pays fat $tack$
[2016-7-16. : 9:28 pm]
CecilSunkure -- They think OOP is good and will want you to drink their cool-aid
