So I am asking this as a question for a friend who is making a map...

How do you permanently blind a unit? If it is even possible...and the unit in this case is a Science Vessel!

None.

its impossible via triggers. Period.

Um, on a side note, where did you get the Confed thing in your name from? Thats MINE.

So what would be the best way of doing it then?

In theory this should work:
You would need to have 2 computers, with several different units:
Science Vessel
Medic
Something else

Then make the something else attack the science vessel. The science vessel will react with an EMP, or Irradiate. Then with the medic in the splash zone or area of attack will react with Optical Flare.

I'll put together a map to do this for an example.

Actually, all you need to do is set a computer that owns the science vessel enemy to the computer that owns the medic. Then place the Science Vessel near the medic with Optical Flare researched by default. Make sure the medic has enough energy.

This will blind the vessel permanently or what?

None.

Optical Flare

This spell is used by the Medic. It costs 75 energy by default.
The targeted unit will gain the "Blind" status, which reduces the unit's vision radius to a minimum. Blind also removes the "Detector" ability of the unit.
This effect can only be canceled with the Medic's Restoration ability.

Computer Use
For the computer to cast optical flare on an enemy unit, the unit must have at least 81 hit points, including protoss shield points. Attacking the Medic or running a Melee AI Script for the computer player controlling the Medic will cause the computer to use the spell more aggressively.

NudeRaider -- blessed innocent soul knows nothing of the strife we had before EUDs were discovered :teehee:

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
