You look over the papers, but they appear to mainly be a collection of bills collected over the years. There are various utility bills, maintenance bills, and landscaping bills. Nothing in particular catches your attention or seems out of the ordinary.
You flip through the journal and see quite a bit has been written, with only the last third of the book empty. You flip to the most recent entry, which is dated the current day.
"My guests are finally starting to arrive, and I couldn't be more excited! I haven't had company even once in the years since my wife passed away. It is too lonely living like this though, by myself with no human contact. I'm glad I managed to make a few new acquaintances and that were willing to come out. I don't know any of them very well yet, but hopefully that will change soon. It'd be nice to actually have some company from time to time, so my goal here is to make a few friends from this lot. I believe another person has shown up, I should hurry and attend to them."

You realize you did not move the bookcase into the entryway, as you can see into the bedroom. Suddenly, the light in the bedroom goes out, and now there are no exits illuminated.
You feel around for a light switch, and finding one on the east wall, you flip it. Nothing happens.
You continue feeling around the room for anything else of interest. Near the east side of the room, something that seems to be a string is hanging from the ceiling.

You can always use some of the books from the bedroom, the bedsheets, wooden painting fragments, wooden bed frame,nightstands, drawers, then burn them using the stove creating a fire source... anything really can be used for a torch... there's no way to tamper with the gas line from the basement so i think we use that as good source of vision right now

did give pretty inconsistent info about the room upstairs, for instance the trap, the bloodied rags, etc.
If you find the entrance to the third floor, the lights in there should be working. Although they may go out at any point...

My guess is that it could be totally innocent such as a nose bleed but it could be something more

I'm currently working on a torch, because the lights in the cellar are broken. I found everything I was looking for in the kitchen; now it's just up to science.
