Map Protecting Issues

I've tried using Uber@tion 3 and OSMap 2 to compress/protect my maps, but they always completely mess up the strings for Unit names.

For example, Zerg units are colored Orange in text. Works fine unprotected. Soon as I protect the map, all unit names get switched around or deleted outright. I keep hearing "the string errors were fixed", but I'm not seeing it.

The sword and the faith

Post the map or just don't protect.

Try a few more compressors, Uberation3 and OS Map 2 are both known to be a bit buggy, OS Map and Uberation 2 are more stable. I would recommend TinyMap, as it will give you the smallest map size, all protectors and unprotectors that are commonly used can be found here: http://falkoner.cow.googlepages.com/programs.html#ProtectionandCompression

The perfect unprotector, if StarCraft can read it, so can this. No protection out there can keep this program from opening it up

Perhaps my eyes missed it, but I didn't see Tinymap under programs in the DLDB. Any reason? And yeah I know the link has it. Just saying.

The DLDB doesn't have a lot of useful programs that are out there (especially in terms of modding). I'll get around to harassing people about it eventually.

Yes, a few random maps have things in them that manage to cheat the programs, but in most cases it's true.

Map protection might not be what it once was, but the people that will be using these maps won't go out of their way to modify them. And in the rare scenario that one does, it wouldn't matter anyway because the maps will be sanctioned and version checked. The compression is the biggest benefit, and the protection that results from that is just a bonus to hinder anyone that's just trying to modify the map, without any prior map making experience; i.e., doesn't know about unprotectors.

By the way, TinyMap works flawlessly. Thanks!

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
