http://www.starcraft2.com/features/protoss/darktemplar-vote.xml

Starcraft 2 is now offering the players the option to choose which dark templar they see in the new game! The choice is between two tribes of dark templars. The first, being the Lenassa tribe dark templar, was the dark templar we saw in Starcraft 1. The second, being the Zer'atai tribe dark templar, is the more recent one we have seen. Or we could have both!

Who are you voting for?

One will say the classic always beats successor. Another will say the successor looks badass. And another will say they both suck. But somehow, we will see both according to the actual poll.

For modding/mapmaking purposes, two different models are better than one model.

Either way I think both will be available in some way through the editor.

Personally, I prefer the original. It gives a nostalgic feeling and it's cool to see the original sprite version turned into a 3d model. The new one doesn't look bad but I don't find a dual scythe that much more interesting than a single blade.

Also, taking into account the portraits, I prefer the original even more. I like the shroud and I think the new one just looks like a predator without a mouth. :-_-: I think the idea of them wearing the bones of dead zerg is cool though.

If they do the random spawn thing though then I think the unit stats should be exactly the same.

I personally like the new dt's sprite better. But I'm in love with the classic dt. However,I think incorporating both into the game will make a much more interesting experience; especially if both dts have different attack rates and damage.

They should be.

I don't think there will. If that happens, players will be wasting minerals and gas (as they are expecting a coin land on heads every time), and discarding the other type ("Tails") for another use.

I say, both!

For campaign purposes, they could make the two units with different attributes, and maybe only appear at different parts of the campaign.
For multiplayer, random spawning should do well.
For map making though, it's a YES YES YES since we could benefit from the two different models.

Just here for the activity... well not really

kk, I'm offically gay because I chose the new one.
The old tribe was badass, but the model is a little odd.

Relatively ancient and inactive

Variety is always nice. Both.

Hello

Both in meele = sucks
one sort should be avaible in meele only, maybe decided which one by the host.
but, yes, having 2 differents DTs would be great in the editor or for modders :)

They should make it so that you can choose which one you want, and give each one slightly different stats. Not different enough that they can be considered different units though.

When ANY unit is created, having different models for the same unit would be nice.

Having both spawn would be retarded imo, but both suck. Maybe #1 is a little better. I really hate the style SC2 is going for.

I'd need to see both of them in a real combat situation before I could judge.

I'd like to see them both cloaked. Then I'll make my decision.

Actually, they both suck. If there is one requirement for DTs it's that they have a huge scythe claymore.

Actually no. Those are exactly what a DT should look like.

Just by looks I would say the Zer'atai DT is better because it looks like it can actually kill something.
The other DT has a blade shorter than zealots, plus the DT with 1 blade only looks good in original SC.
Other than that having both would be nice because you can do more with more units.

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.
[2026-6-20. : 3:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
