What? I meant that my CD stays in my computer.

It would've made a lot more sense if you said it the other way around :P

However, there is something that current versions of the server software run by private servers (PvPGN) send out to the game that is not compatible with Data Execution Prevention, so it needs to be disabled to connect.
Hmm.. ok so I should offer a toggled starcraft.exe and a non-toggled one? So for instance each patch should include the option to have the "no-cd" (togglenx built in) or the standard .exe (non-toggled)? In the case of the 1.15.2 patch, just the 2 starcraft.exes (toggle/not toggled)
Well, it probably isn't necessary to have a non-patched version for old versions (unless you just want to make sure people can still use the regular update to the latest version if they didn't need the no-cd patch). If you are wanting to make it possible to use 1.15.2 on private servers, you could include the ToggleNX utility to modify the exe, though (or whatever method you are using to do it). Just keep in mind that any exe modifications do prevent you from getting on the official Battle.net and do prevent updates from working properly.

The sword and the faith

Just a note here, the downloads a little freaky, or at least it was for me. Started around 400kbps, my eyes jumped out of their sockets, it than sank to about 110KBPs and held steady. Now that Ive moved back to XP everything should be peachy. Thanks Baja.

I took your advice for the latest 1.1 version. Basically Vista users can toggle this when patching to 1.15.2 for PvPGN play on private servers. (on = toggled starcraft.exe, off = default starcraft.exe) I did not include the standard starcraft.exe's for 1.07-1.15.1. Users will need to use the downgrader to upgrade to 1.15.2 instead of Bnet. Hopefully this won't be too big of an issue... should be faster than Bnet anyways. I better make a note of that in readme. :ermm:

my host costs about 45 dollars a YEAR.. so it's performance can vary at times! :P

@KK and Farty..
na his phrasing of the disk always being in the drive was clear. I was just slow.

[The Great Yam] -- I got it working. I have to have two copies of Starcraft, one for normal play and one for mods.
[Polaris[MM] -- Well, actually, you seem to be the only person who's having any trouble
[The Great Yam] -- You guys should really try to be more compatible.
[The Great Yam] -- I didn't buy my computer, my mother did. I don't like Vista at all. I toggled the thing off, I guess?
Polaris[MM] -- Its not our fault you use Vista. Blame that.
[The Great Yam] -- LOUSY PIECES OF CRAP
[The Great Yam] -- SC downgraders has done this to me too... Damn it, I really should stop trying to run mods, they just corrupt my copy of SC.
[The Great Yam] -- Damn it! The lousy ToggleNX ruined my copy of Starcraft! Thanks, modding community. Not only can I not use your servers, now I can't use b.net either!
I read about this users frustrations with Vista and private servers in the shoutbox and am responding here. Basically ShadowFlare's toggleNX is not a "toggle" so to speak. It can only go one way and having a backup starcraft.exe is the only way around this. This downgrader tackles this issue and you Vista users should be using it! And you don't need your stupid cd either... And if you still have your CD in the drive, wtf? get with the times! :bleh:

Maybe you used it wrong in some way, or maybe there was some other modification that was installed. As far as just the ToggleNX utility I made, it literally just toggles a single bit in the exe. It also uses the proper method of finding the location of the value containing that bit.

Updated for 1.16.

Also the version numbers now represent the highest patch available. So this 1.16 version is newer than the older v1.2. Duh! should have used that method from the start!

NO CD forever!

Question: It says it is unable to locate Starcraft when I run the downgrader. StarCraft is installed, and does have a registry. How do I fix this?

It might check for a specific folder, where is your SC installed?

I actually lost my discs, so I downloaded it using Blizzard's handy store feature. Perhaps that's what messed it up?

The actual program is in C:\Program Files\StarCraft, but in my Registry Editor it's in a folder called Blizzard Entertainment along with my WoW.

EDIT:
Farty's works fine for me, but since I don't have the discs, I was hoping to get this downgrader working.

Well if the registry points to the wrong place for StarCraft, maybe thats the reason it cant be found? Make it point to the correct folder and try again.

Jan 2 2009, 6:46 pm DevliN Post #33

Woah

I didn't know what the "wrong place" was, and figured that all Blizz games end up in that registry.

EDIT:
And the GamePath/InstallPath are correct for it. What should I change?

Oh i though you meant GamePath/InstallPath where set to some folder called "Blizzard Entertainment" somewhere. If those registry entries are pointing to the correct folder with the StarCraft.exe then I don't know why it doesn't work.

Ah, gotcha. I think Blizzard just lumps its games in this folder in RegEdit, but all the paths go to the correct places in Program Files.

The program reads your Starcraft installation registry. It doesn't prompt for your starcraft folder and then alter or add any reg keys, it just reads. If you get the error "unable to locate starcraft" then your registry keys could be pointing other thanwhere you have starcraft installed. Starcraft doesn't have to be installed to C:\Program Files\Starcraft for this program to work, but the folder does have to match your reg keys.

Make sure "Install Path" and "Program" point to your starcraft folder. Check this thread for more details on how to do that.

Hope that helps. If not, you can always manipulate the patch files of Farty's downgrader to use ShadowFlare's no-cd as well.

Also, IF nothing works, you can open up BWAIDowngrader with WinMPQ, and extract everything that contains "setupdat\files\...". Those are all the files that you could manually add to your starcraft folder OR use with Farty's etc to downgrade..

OR give Farty some $$$ to finish his Downgrader... what's taking so long? :)

Woah

That's really interesting. My Registry literally has:
(Default)
GamePath
InstallPath
UninstallPath

All are being sent to the right folder where SC is. Based on your screenshot, I'm missing quite a few things (Brood War, Program, Recent Maps, Retail, StarCD, StarEdit).

EDIT:
Nevermind. I created a Program.reg for it, and it works perfectly. Thanks for all the help.

Nice good job Blizzard e-installer! When/IF another patch comes out, I will reduce the size of this program as Heinermann suggested. Some patch_rt.mpq's are literally the same etc. Also, with a reduced size, I might add 1.12 for a few mods and 1.15.3 for the ICCUP thing.

... OR maybe Farty will just finish his uber SCD4 and we can get on with our lives.

Jan 21 2009, 9:56 pm bajadulce Post #39

updated for 1.16.1.
see first post for link.

*reduced # of patch_rt.mpq to 3 (1.07, 1.10, 1.16). Program is now approx 10mb as opposed to 16.
*removed a check that interfered with Blizzard's e-installation.
*ICCUP 1.15.3 NOT added, because most likely they will update their software to the newer 1.16.1 since the lag issue has been addressed.

NOTE:
A reminder that this program uses ShadowFlare's NO-CD utility. Bnet will not recognize any of the 1.07-1.15.1 downgrades NOR the 1.16.1 toggleNX option. Use the 1.16.1 (Bnet) option to return to a 100% working Bnet 1.16.1.
