You may have been a Detective that day/night cycle, but if you die, your investigation fails. The results don't go out just because you say so. Even if you had lived, the results are still only PMed to you and Detective dealings are not revealed to the town. If you want to see why, have a read through of Mafia 2.

I very much did enjoy the roleplaying, though.

And if it had gone through even though he had died, we would've known he was to be trusted if he PMed us later with the results of his investigation.
