Can't find SCMdraft2 maps IN-game

Hello all,

I have run into a rather frustrating issue in my latest attempts at SCMdraft2. I have used the software before to great extent many years ago, but have just now re-obtained the program to create more maps. Any map that I create in SCMdraft2, does not show up in Starcraft 1. I have saved maps in very specific locations, i.e Starcraft/maps/savedmap.scx but when I attempt to play the map in game it's as if I never saved it. When I return to SCMdraft2, the map appears in my recent maps as well as appears in my computer's files. I have tried editing maps that I downloaded as well as creating blank maps and saving them just as that, but still nothing seems to appear in game. I have never had this issue before with SCMdraft2, but I believe it has something to do with the tiny, golden padlock which appears on the thumbnail of every map I create. I assumed I had some option enabled to save my maps as protected, but I couldn't seem to find how to disable such feature. As I said, even maps I create from scratch hold this same icon and are absolutely unavailable in game. The only way I can access them is through SCMdraft2.

TL;DR
All maps created in SCMdraft2 appear with a padlock on the thumbnail as if protected, and are unavailable in Starcraft 1, only accessible through SCMdraft2.

Please help!

SCMDraft doesn't have a protection feature, so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. You should upload one of the maps here and maybe we can see what's up.

As I attempt to find the file from the file browser, it doesn't seem to appear even in my computer's files at this point even when with "All files" as my search. The only place I can see the file is in SCMdraft2 or if I save it on my desktop.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

The icon is related to the file extension and file properties; they have nothing to do with ScmDraft. It sounds like what you are describing is this: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/lock-padlock-icon-files-folders-windows-7/

Scx maps won't show unless you're playing the expansion. By guess in you're either playing the original game or putting the map in the wrong location. Verify that where you're putting the map is in the SC directory, and that the map has an extension of scm or scx.

I doubt it's ScmDraft causing the issue; can you save maps with other editors in the same place and have it work?

What is the full path of where you're saving the file, and what is the full path of where you have StarCraft installed?

Also, if you are playing Brood War, you'll have to go up a level to see maps in StarCraft/Maps, because it's looking at the "StarCraft/Maps/Brood War" directory by default.

First off, thank you all very much for the quick responses!

I have tried saving a blank map in Starcraft Campaign Editor and I run into the same issue. I understand that you have to use the "up one level" folder to reach the "maps" directory in the Starcraft program files which holds all maps. I have attached a picture showing the only possible way to view the map. Also, I have shown where in SCMdraft2 the map appears, but when searching through my computer's files it does not.

(In the maps2 image the default starcraft maps continue the list down to (8) The Hunters as usual, no custom maps are listed.)

EDIT: Unfortunately I cannot get a vivid picture from my Starcraft 1 client showing the same directory without the maps, it just appears as a very distorted and blacked out image but I assure you I am looking in the correct location.

EUREKA! .. sort of.

By saving the file to my desktop it appears without the padlock, and then by manually moving the file (cut/paste) into the maps directory I am able to see and play it in SC1. It appears saving to the maps directory directly is causing my issue, as saving in desktop then transferring the file does in fact work. However, I have to do this process with every new update. If I overwrite the file in the maps directory it will appear to save/overwrite but the changes will not appear in game. I have to save the file again to desktop then move it back into the Starcraft/maps directory.

EDIT: Now I also run into the issue when I select "Locations" on any map, it crashes the client.

The problem is a Windows 7 feature that prevents programs from writing in the program files directory. Instead it lets them virtually write there. I'm actually not sure what this means exactly, however it means that when an older program, that doesn't support this new feature, tries to save something under C:\program files\... it doesn't work. Only newer programs can do that. (I think)

Solution is to install StarCraft to another directory (e.g. D:\Games\) where ScmD will have write privileges.

This sounds genius, this is the first time using SCMdraft2 on Windows 7, I used to make all my maps on Windows XP and this makes sense as to why I can save them and access them from the Desktop but not program files. Testing now...

It works! Everything you explained there makes perfect sense and completely fixes that error, I'm able to save directly to the maps file in my Starcraft directory and the changes appear in-game. Thank you so much for your insight, it also appears to have fixed the locations issue.

Thank you all so much for your time and effort!!

EDIT: Ran as Admin to fix problem, however I guarantee that installing into the Games directory would allow the same outcome without running as Admin

We need to sticky this Windows 7 thing because this is at least the 5th time it's come up.

Hah, I use Windows 7 as well, but since my SC isn't installed in Program Files, I never figured out this could have caused trouble.

I had the same problem. Running as admin works for me.
