What made you decide to go to Alaska and who the hell decided to take you there?

I haven't stopped at any big city except in Oklahoma City because I got stuck right in it. Hitch-hiking out of these places is hell, so I tend to avoid them. (And nothing really interests me in cities anyways.)
For the funding, I work as a tree planter for 2 months (approximately 185$/day, working 4 days on, and then 1 day off), a cherry picker for 2 weeks (approximately 17$/h, working about 6 hours per day), and I pick up any job that is offered to me on the road (10 days in the Yukon, this year, @17$/h, and I had nearly as many hours as I wanted). That's way more than enough for me to subsist for the rest of the year. I never pay any rent (I sleep outside all the time, or at my dad's house when I'm back in Montreal), and mostly only pay for food (and occasionally alcohol, parties, and the likes).
The 32 days I went through the US cost me only 200$, for reference. So that's about 1 day of work of tree planting. You can see how easily I can build up a saving account while still having a whole bunch of freedom and fun.

Alaska, for three reasons: I had never been there before, I had heard that the Top Of The World Highway was quite beautiful, and I met a guy that was going to do a hike in Skagway. But really, as much as people like to go to the "Last Frontier", I have personally had -so much more- fun out in the Yukon. I believe there is way more diversity in the wilderness of the Yukon. And the people are so great (just like in Alaska, I would presume)... and there is a pretty big proportion of the community that is French.
I called my dad somewhere in between 2 and 4 times maybe?
I don't really like calling home, just like I don't like phones. Hence why I do not have any cellphone. I also do not have any computer so I rely on libraries mostly to get access to internet.
