Is it possible to subtract a unit's health? An example of that is a map called Rush 1 by tuxedo-templar. I'm making a map, and I made it so that whenever you create a marine, It will create an explosion on the player you want to hit. I already did that, but I just don't know how you subtract a unit's health whenever I do that. its a really important part in my map so it would be REALLY helpful if you help me!

well without euds, you've have to go with modifying a units health, using percentages.

Correction: You would have to modify unit health if you used EUDs, as they can merely detect the health of specific units.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

You have a few methods. The first has been mentioned. EUDs, but that's way out of your league. If you want to try them, I can't stop you, but there's plenty of information in the wiki and in UMS assistance. And WITH EUDs, you'll still have to go with modifying a units health, using percentages.

The second is VHP. Likewise this is in the wiki. Rush used a method of VHP where there are 5 computers, each with a different level of virtual hit points. After yellow suffers a certain number of virtual damage stored in a death counter, the dc is reset, and the yellow unit is given to white. If you do damage to multiple units, it doesn't work perfectly but it still works.

The third, and I think the best option, is Direct Damage System (DDS). Look at it here.

The fourth, is to ignore the whole "subtract damage" and set health to either 1% (very rarely will it heal the unit) or kill it outright.

NudeRaider -- blessed innocent soul knows nothing of the strife we had before EUDs were discovered :teehee:

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
