SCX = Star Craft Expansion, if it's saved in .SCX it's because its only playable with starcraft brood war.

'Open' you mean open them in a map editor a presume? Make sure the map isn't protected. Another tech nerd might have to anwser your question, I'm better with trigger help then actual starcraft mess ups.

Well, when I download maps from the site and try to open them, it gives me an error 'Please make sure that the file is a valid Starcraft data file.'

Try to just open a regular Blizzard made .scx map.

That means the map you wanted to open before was protected so that most people wouldn't be able to open it
