Strings are for any custom text you have (display text message, renaming units, comments on triggers, etc.) in your map. For more information, check the wiki article: http://www.staredit.net/starcraft/Strings

You can find that article by going to the Sen SC1 Wiki and searching "Strings" on the left-hand side.
