·· The Trump Card
Enter Mafia: a strategic guessing game of murder, mystery, and statistics! Players dwell within a town that has been infiltrated by the Mafia. Dead bodies start turning up and everyone becomes a suspect. If the Townspeople manage to lynch all the Mafia, they win. Otherwise, the Mafia kill everyone in the town and claim victory.
** NEWS **
Mafia victory!
** HOW IT WORKS **
Players receive roles at the start of the game. Roles are randomly selected. There are only two factions: townsperson and mafia. During the night, members of the mafia kill the townspeople. The Mafia will know who all the other Mafia are, but the townspeople have no additional information.
The game takes place over alternating periods of Day and Night. (Game Time, not according to the real world.) The game begins at day.
** NIGHT **
During the night, the town sleeps and the Mafia strikes. A time-limit is imposed on the night phase. Night ends with a posted report of the killings and other actions that may have taken place. The killing reports include no clues identifying the mafia -- as well as no red herrings to throw people off.
-- ORDER OF NIGHT ACTIONS
(Not necessarily reflected in game posts)
1. Mafia abilities
2. Protection abilities
3. Nights hits (mafia)
4. Night hits (townspeople)
5. Investigations
6. Day
(nice and simple!)
** DAY **
Democracy rules by day in form of a vote. All players (including mafia) gather for a "town meeting" to interpret behavior and discuss amongst themselves who might be Mafia. Every player (including Mafia) may place a vote to select a player to be lynched and killed off.
-- VOTING REGULATIONS
- You must vote in the topic. Votes via PMs, battle.net, IMs, or any other medium are not acceptable and not counted.
- Votes must be placed for specific individuals only, no variable voting. (ie, no "guy who posts next" or "biggest bandwagon")
- Votes must be clear and free of ambiguity. A simple "I vote X" is sufficent. Ambiguous statements, such as "I think X might be mafia" will not be counted.
- You may not vote for dead players, or people who are not playing. You may vote for yourself, however.
- You may only place one vote on one person.
- You may formally abstain from the the vote to be factored in as active and be included in the total of votes placed.
- You may change your vote until day ends. Do not abuse this. You will be forbidden from further vote changes if you make things difficult with vote changes.
- In case of a tie for a lynch, the Mayor will decide who is lynched. If no Mayor is present, both candidates are lynched. If there is a tie during the mayor election, the election will be postponed for a day until a final decision is made.
- Please go out of your way to make your vote visible. A seperate line is nice. We promise not to get insulted if you pretend we're almost blind.
After the town has decided by majority or time up, the victim(s) is/are lynched and their alignment and role revealed. If there are still surviving mafia, the next night begins.
** VICTORY CONDITIONS **
The day and night cycles repeat until one side is victorious.
The town wins when all mafia have been lynched.
The mafia wins when they outnumber the townspeople. (they would outvote and overpower them.)
In a case where 1 mafia and 1 townsperson remain, the mafia wins.
** MISCELLANEOUS **
A. Conversation via external means is allowed. You may encounter or engage in deception, conspiracies, and trickery. We take no responsiblity for broken trust and shattered friendships - outside communication takes place at your own risk. Some well-played impersonations can dramatically alter the outcome of the game.
B. Dead persons and non-players MAY NOT talk. Any posts violating this rule will be reported and severity will be given out. No exceptions.
C. One may not request or volunteer screenshots, videos, etc. of another's role screen or someone's password via the thread, a PM, or any other method. The game is intended to be won via behavioral analysis. Such exchanges will be reported and take place at your own risk.
-- SIGNING UP
If the game has not started, you may sign up by posting in this thread and I will add you to list. There is no maximum amount of players.
Take note of the following:
1. A non-default avatar is required to play. If you wish to play, make sure you have chosen a unique avatar.
2. If you won't play unless you get a certain role, don't play at all. Useless and inactive townies ruin balancing and ultimately, the game itself.
3. If you plan on being away from the game for more than 3 days at a time during the game, it is better that you do not play and sit the round out.
4. If the game has already started, you must wait until the next game. People always tell me to sign them up during the game. They then become inactive or I forget to sign them up. To prevent this problem, I ask all those who wish to play to wait for the next round.
5. Automatic Signup is requestable for future games. It is automatically cancelled if you are booted from the game for any reason.
If you have any questions, PM me.

** ROLES **
MAFIA ASSASSIN - The Assassin can choose one person to stalk each night. He is the primary role of the mafia.
Assassinate: Stalks a person at night, killing them if they're unprotected.
Investigate: Stalks a person at night, revealing who they visited and what roles visited them. May not be used in conjunction with Assassinate. If a Detective visits the same target, the Assassin will show up as a Detective.
MAFIA SABOTEUR - A master of tampering with machinery and bending it to his will.
Sabotage: During the night, the Saboteur can tamper with a player of their choice's voting booth, forcing their vote to be redirected toward another player of the Saboteur's choosing the following day, and also doubling that vote count.
Rig: The Saboteur rigs a player of their choice's voting booth with a bomb that will set off and kill the player if that player's final vote is set on another player of the Saboteur's choosing for the rest of the game.
MAFIA BEGUILER - ?
BELL RINGER - The bell ringer slashes the town's bureaucratic red tape during lynches by ending votes prematurely.
Ring Bell: Ends the day prematurely if at least 3 votes are casted by either posting in the topic or PMing me. Any votes placed after the fact are discounted, and the vote count is left as is and the current leader(s) is lynched. May only use the power once per game, and cannot use it during the mayor elections.
DETECTIVE - A regular gumshoe, the Detective has been commissioned by the local authorities to leave no stone unturned in tracking the Mafia.
Investigate: Each and every night, the detective gets to investigate one player and learn of who they visit and what roles visit them. The trick is persuading others in their votes of the validity of your claims.
DOCTOR - The only one with medical experience, the Doctor dedicates his time to make sure casualty reports are as short as possible.
Protect: The Doctor saves one person from death at night. Should someone attack this person, the Doctor will keep them alive. The Doctor can protect himself but cannot protect someone from a Rogue Engineer's Activate ability. The Mafia may target the same person multiple times to negate the Doctor's protection.
ELDER - The Elder wields additional political influence, and has earned his respect within the town.
Influence: (Passive) The Elder's vote counts twice unless it's requested that they use one vote. If their booth is sabotaged, both votes will be redirected.
Gather: During the day, the Elder may PM me to roll over a vote into the next day. (ie: Elder has one vote on day 1, then has three votes on day 2)
PSYCHO - That one guy you always picked on in high school.
Insanity: (Passive/Active) If the Psycho is lynched by the town, he gets to take a player of his choice with him to the grave via in-game post. If the Psycho is killed at night, the Psycho dies but his killer is "injured", and cannot use an action the following night.
ROGUE ENGINEER - Each night the Rogue Engineer can choose a target. He will assault the target while they are alone, then fit them with a device he designed himself. It includes parts of an intercom, which allow two-way communication between the Rogue Engineer and the target. It also consists of a pump, concentrated sulfuric acid, and a hypodermic needle penetrating the base of the brainstem. The device is designed to activate in the event removal is attempted, or upon receiving a remote signal. The Rogue Engineer can activate the device at any time. He also has a pacemaker which is monitored remotely, and has set every device to activate in the event of his death.
Constrain: If the target is not visited by another player, the Rogue Engineer fits the target with a lethal remote-controlled device. The target will die if the Rogue Engineer dies.
Activate: Triggers the device of any previously constrained player, killing them. Can be used at any time.
Transmit: Submits a message to be sent anonymously to any previously constrained player. Can be used once each day and night for each target. All previously constrained players gain this ability as well, and their messages are sent without anonymity to the Rogue Engineer.
MAYOR - The mayor is elected at the start of the game to "lead" the town. Any player may be elected mayor, including mafia and other special roles.
Political Power: (Passive) Additional voting weight during the day varying on number of votes alive. (his normal 1 vote +10% of total potential votes, rounded up after 4, ie, with 14 total people will have 2 votes, and with 15 will have 3 votes)
Secret Service: (Passive) Protection of bodyguards (because his role isn't hidden, making him a target). So long as one or more bodyguards are alive, the mayor may not be targetted at night. (However, he can always be lynched.) Upon his election the mayor chooses two people to become his bodyguards. If no bodyguards have free will, the Rogue Engineer may target the Mayor.
Executive Decision: May declare EITHER two (2) days of "double lynchings" OR one (1) day of "triple lynching".
First Blood: Immediately upon being elected, the Mayor may or may not choose one player to be lynched unconditionally.
BODYGUARD - The Bodyguards are chosen by the Mayor upon his election, and otherwise they retain their normal roles.
Protector: (Passive) While a Bodyguard is still alive and has free will, the Mayor cannot be harmed.
THEORETICAL PHYSICIST - The Theoretical Physicist is a man with a plan and the brains to execute it.
Chronology Reversal: After the first two day/night cycles, the Theoretical Physicist may reverse time one full day/night cycle. Everything that happened in this time period is undone except for the time machine itself, and mind erasure is not performed. May only be used once per game.
VETERAN - He's dealt with his fair share of Mafia, and has grown accustomed to surviving their attacks.
Bulletproof: (Passive) The Veteran is a hearty fellow and has two night lives.
Dodge: The Veteran escapes any and all actions placed on him for the night. May be used once per game.
Suspicion: The Veteran chooses a certain person to avoid the night actions of that night, but is prone to all others.
SHAPESHIFTER: A jack of all trades, the Shapeshifter does what it says on the tin.
Shapeshift: (Passive) Each night the Shapeshifter will be given a role in the cycle of Detective, Doctor, and Elder (the following day) either forwards or backwards (the Shapeshifter will be told) and may use one action from that role for that night or day. They may not use the Elder's Gather ability.
I play the role of "God". My judgment is used where I deem it necessary. Depending on how I balance the game, I may be the collective target of the mafia for the first night. Divine intervention via lightning bolts may occur. If you are not monotheistic, you are now. If you have any suggestions, let me know.
