It used to be unpaid. Way back when the country was founded, elected officials met every weekend (can't remember if it was Sat. or Sun.). They provided for themselves and the economy first, then decided shit. Now, it's actually almost unseen to have a legitimate job, outside of being a career politician.

I wouldn't throw the USA under the bus just yet.

It has its problems, but at least you can point out its problems without being arrested or worse. Many places, such as China, do not have the same luxury.
