[2014-8-29. : 11:09 pm] Jack -- As in, if you get good at cooking you reward yourself with good food![2014-8-29. : 11:09 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- My mom went to England for three months while I was in highschool and I was fine.[2014-8-29. : 11:08 pm] Wing Zero -- my mom went to serbia for two weeks and by the end of the first week my dad and I were down to eating ramen noodles[2014-8-29. : 11:07 pm] Wing Zero -- I havn't been out on my own anywhere so im terrified of the day that ill have to[2014-8-29. : 11:07 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- lol who needs school, just fail highschool, get a job and move out and then only work for 3 days while still netting a positive income ![]() [2014-8-29. : 11:02 pm] Fire_Kame -- my sister on the other hand had to get an apartment her first year at her school because they didn't have dorm space[2014-8-29. : 11:02 pm] Fire_Kame -- the first school I went to made it mandatory to live on campus the first year[2014-8-29. : 11:00 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I think dev must be doing something, that shout took a long time to send[2014-8-29. : 11:00 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] --
DevliN shouted: Oh weird, the shoutbox stopped refreshing. I had to manually do it. DEVOURER?!
DevliN It does that sometimes. I've also seen it skip shouts, but that was during testing so I'm not sure if that is still there.[2014-8-29. : 11:00 pm] Dem0n -- I got an apartment my freshman year, and it's better than a dorm would ever be[2014-8-29. : 11:00 pm] DevliN -- Oh weird, the shoutbox stopped refreshing. I had to manually do it. DEVOURER?![2014-8-29. : 10:59 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- I was talking to somebody at work, and she was saying what bands she liked and one of them is playing today, so I was like "o are you going to the show?" and she was like "I didn't know about it, but now I really want to but don't have anybody to go with " so I was like "I'll go! Shows are fun!", and then bought tickets and am going to go pick her up in a while.[2014-8-29. : 10:59 pm] Dem0n -- Dorms aren't really ever mandatory, but it's the easiest way to meet people, so almost everyone does it[2014-8-29. : 10:58 pm] O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- so I think I may have set myself up on a date tonight.[2014-8-29. : 10:57 pm] Fire_Kame -- It depends on where you go - since dorms somewhat require you to also have a meal plan you can save money, but a lot of schools have off campus housing deals that will make it cheaper[2014-8-29. : 10:57 pm] payne --
DevliN shouted: From my experience, though, the people I know still living at home have no desire to leave and become responsible for themselves because it is cheaper and easier that way
DevliN i stay at my dad's home cuz it's cheaper ;o[2014-8-29. : 10:56 pm] lil-Inferno --
DevliN shouted: Most friends of mine lived on campus in a dorm for the first year (which may have been mandatory) and then moved out to apartments for the remaining years.
DevliN I'm pretty sure it's mandatory at most colleges.[2014-8-29. : 10:55 pm] lil-Inferno -- I came to the realization that I can't live under my parents' fold forever, so I may as well live away from them. At least for now.[2014-8-29. : 10:55 pm] DevliN --
Jack shouted: Inferno I know, I just assumed that was what demon meant when he said dorm life = social life
Jack Aside from him maybe just trolling, I always saw dorm life = social life as meaning it forces you to make new friends and socialize, not necessarily get shitfaced daily. ![]() [2014-8-29. : 10:54 pm] payne --
DevliN shouted: You can learn a lot by going off the rails with no responsibility. Perhaps it would teach you to become responsible, even.
DevliN <[2014-8-29. : 10:54 pm] lil-Inferno -- I'm sure it happens, but most of those scenarios are reserved for movies.[2014-8-29. : 10:53 pm] DevliN -- Most friends of mine lived on campus in a dorm for the first year (which may have been mandatory) and then moved out to apartments for the remaining years.[2014-8-29. : 10:52 pm] Jack -- Lanthanide, you can learn at uni but it's just really slow compared to self-learning for the majority of disciplines[2014-8-29. : 10:52 pm] Wing Zero --
Jack shouted: I don't know how much of a stereotype it is but "out on your own" in the USA from what I've heard basically means going to live in a dorm and getting wasted all the time and basically living irresponsibly. It wouldn't be too bad if you were flatting with some friends, then you've got some responsibility still, but even then with no one to watch out for you I'd say most young people would tend to go a bit craycray
Jack Well that would be the entire reason for it yes[2014-8-29. : 10:52 pm] Jack -- Inferno I know, I just assumed that was what demon meant when he said dorm life = social life[2014-8-29. : 10:52 pm] Lanthanide -- get a piece of paper to get a job but not actually learn anything? um...[2014-8-29. : 10:51 pm] Dem0n -- lol why the fuck are you lecturing us on college, as if we haven't already been attending for two years?[2014-8-29. : 10:51 pm] DevliN -- From my experience, though, the people I know still living at home have no desire to leave and become responsible for themselves because it is cheaper and easier that way[2014-8-29. : 10:51 pm] Jack -- Inferno, college is for getting a bit of paper that will help you get a job, and it's also for the contacts you make while there. It's not so much for actual learning (well, you can learn but it's really slow).[2014-8-29. : 10:51 pm] lil-Inferno -- You don't need to get wasted all the time to have a social life.[2014-8-29. : 10:51 pm] Dem0n -- It's pretty hard. You don't get to socialize much in class (if at all) since the teacher is always talking, and then if you commute, there's not many chances for you to meet people, unless you go to events and join clubs.[2014-8-29. : 10:51 pm] DevliN -- I have plenty of friends who still live at home and don't understand responsibility, and plenty of friends who went to college and partied who then learned why that was bad and got their shit together.[2014-8-29. : 10:49 pm] Jack -- DevliN yeah but better to learn responsibility without the downside of going off the rails, right? You waste so much time and don't really gain much by going and partying and stuff[2014-8-29. : 10:49 pm] Jack -- I don't know how much of a stereotype it is but "out on your own" in the USA from what I've heard basically means going to live in a dorm and getting wasted all the time and basically living irresponsibly. It wouldn't be too bad if you were flatting with some friends, then you've got some responsibility still, but even then with no one to watch out for you I'd say most young people would tend to go a bit craycray[2014-8-29. : 10:49 pm] lil-Inferno -- I'm only like half an hour away, I just wanted to experience living away from family since I commuted the first two years. Didn't get the college experience, y'know?[2014-8-29. : 10:49 pm] DevliN -- You can learn a lot by going off the rails with no responsibility. Perhaps it would teach you to become responsible, even.[2014-8-29. : 10:48 pm] Wing Zero -- Cheaper absolutely, but imo you really need a taste of what its like to be out on your own[2014-8-29. : 10:47 pm] Jack -- Staying with family is almost always going to be better financially, and usually is in terms of not going off the rails when you're at a dorm with no responsibility and no one watching out for you |
