Establish a Timer to Create Food Times a Breeze
For children, meal times can turn into a marathon packed with threats, nagging and even reprimanding the kids to eat their food. Sounds dramatic? This does.
In frustration in our frustration, we set the clock for 10 minutes one night, and announced that anyone who was done with their meal by the time the timer beeped got dessert. The remaining 10 minutes were full of chit-chat and singing, as well as casual banter, because we didn't have to yell and beg anymore. The timer went off, and those who had finished their meal were served dessert. Others didn't.
Tips For Using The Dinner Timer The "dinner's ready" timer is a daily event in our home! Here are a few ways I've discovered to make it super effective:
Keep the dessert simple. SUPER simple.
We're careful to not give them more than they could/should take in, since they're required to eat each bite of what's on their plate before the timer runs out for dessert.
There is no requirement to eat everything that's on their plates. But , they may eat more have dessert if they wish.
The meal timer can only be utilized when absolutely needed. Some days we don't need the timer. People are hungry, love dinner, or the stars align for some reason, and dinner proceeds without a hitch.
The timer is used for every meal, not only dinner. This is especially useful for mornings when children have to be at school. It's an effort to get everyone out of the door in time.
Try to keep mealtimes fun and conversational, even if/when the timer is in use. Nobody will be enticed to go out for dinner If it's an absolute drag! For more ideas on making your dinner enjoyable for everyone, read my dinnertime tips.
Tip: Timer-Encourage Playtime A few kids have learned the art of playing independently or focusing on certain things for extended periods of time. If you need assistance to focus on specific aspects of play, you can use a timer! This is great for kids who tend to get bored and are prone to jumping from one task to another. This will keep them busy and allow them to play.
It is likely that you will discover your children to be comfortable with these activities. The timer may become obsolete. It's still a fantastic method to help them focus before they go outside to play, watch TV or do homework.
