When folks first begin making candles, they're often shocked by how many types of wicks they can choose from. It can be difficult to pick the best kind of wick for your candle. The right wick can make all the difference between a candle being a huge success or failing. The proper wicking technique is vital to the long-term durability of your candle, its capacity to burn efficiently and the length of time it remains burning.

You can choose to have your wicks tabbed in advance, or put on spools.

Most often, pre-tabbed wicks are used in candle containers and votives. They are stiff wicks of varying lengths with the base of a metal. When you first begin choosing the wicks you want, it is suggested that you spend some time looking up wicks either in the book on candle making or online at one of the numerous candle-making supply websites. Wicks are available in a range of sizes, described by a series of numbers, which can be complex to grasp at first. Find out what the definitions for each wick line mean.

The diameter of the candle will help you determine the size of wick you'll require. The size of the wick you require will be determined by the diameter of your candle.

When you make container candles it is important to make sure that the wick is large enough to melt the candle's wax fully across the top. Also, you want to avoid tunnelling, which is when the candle's wick burns across the center of the container, leaving an unlit tunnel of wax along the sides. It is also important to make sure that the wick size isn't too big. This can make the candle burn more quickly than it should and cause excessive smoke or soot as well.

Be aware that selecting the best wick is not a perfect science. Although manufacturers might be capable of recommending certain kinds of wicks which be effective, you will need to play around to determine what is the most effective for your candles. Ultimately, you will find the wicks that you love working with. And by trying different kinds that you can to learn which wicks produce the desired results.
