"Vanity Mods"

A long time ago I once played a mod that did nothing but change the sprites/grps for units into other sprites. ALSO, I was able to play this mod online with other people without downgrading and with people who didn't have the mod. I remember playing RE: Raccoon city by Panzer with this mod on and the zombies were like MegaMans and my ghosts where Ryu's from street fighter. My question is what is this type of mod called and is it still available to date? TZ informs me this sort of thing is called a "Vanity mod" (he believes). I can't seem to find any of these types of mods anywhere and I REALLY want to use them while i play on battle.net to make things more interesting. MORE importantly if someone knows the mod that im talking about, if they could link me to a mod or a mod similar so that I may play it over battle.net.

Side note: The mod I played was based on videogame and each race had a theme. for ex. Terran was Capcom, zerg was zega, and toss was nintendo or something like that. I will never forget the Mario's for SCV's. Sorry for not being specific but this species of mods almost seem like a myth since I have heard next to 0 talk about it since the last time i played with one on. (2-3 years ago)

tl;dr mods that only change sprites/grps over battle.net without causing desyncs. WHERE CAN I GET?

Oh, cool but do you know where I can get? It seems like everyone likes to make mods that do everything else included... so.. yea.. ;o

Just here for the activity... well not really

You make it yourself.

Yeah. There aren't that many modders that see graphic-only mods as interesting. Maybe back when there weren't that many modding tools, but now you'll need to make your own.

Wait, so you're saying I can make a mod with nothing but custom GRPs and play it on B.net without everyone needing the file and downgrading?

None.

Oh ok, thanks. So everyone can see the changes if they have the self executable file but there's no need to downgrade?

None.

Unless you are using plugins, EXE edits, or grafting then you don't need to downgrade.

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.
[2026-6-20. : 3:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new

Oh_Man -- makes me wonder if SEN knows anything about the topic
