http://starcraft2.com/features/misc/battlenet.xml

Looks pretty cool.

Looks like the new Battle.Net is going to be great for the modding community.

Steam's community features + Xbox Live's popularity + It's Free = :awesome:

Yes, it will be awesome.

$10 says that it's going to become even MORE like xbox live and start charging for the smallest things.

Blizzard isn't a douche bag like microsoft.

I don't think they will simply because of tradition. They haven't charged for 10+ years, and if they chose to do so now, players would be pissed off.

That's awesome. I think I need a new computer though in order to play sc2. Mine is old.

Woah

They're going to charge for maps, so I wouldn't call it all free.

I thought Activision didn't have any say over SC2, even though they merged companies.

They don't, Blizzard has full autonomy over itself; it functions as normal as if there wasn't a change. If Activision tried to tell Blizz what to do Blizz could easily say, "fuck you, we're leaving," and do it.

I'm pumped for the b.net change. It's about time this 12 year-old system got updated.

DotA?
DotA better not come to sc2. :/

Feb 10 2010, 9:36 pm Neki Post #12

Maybe not the exact map DotA itself, but there will be a lot of DotA/AoS rip-offs/clones in Starcraft II. Can't really help that though.

Oh it won't. Not as it originally was, anyhow...

I suspect instead a CTF type of game will take over SC2. I sense it.

I wonder if the zerg expansion will come in a mushy liquid UI.

Woah

They said at BlizzCon there would be a DotA map in SC2. Hell, look at those mock-ups and see the Blizzard logo as the creator of the DotA maps.

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

Blizzard will most definitely make one of their default UMS maps, like they did for SC with a few maps (Tetris for instance), with the game. I can easily see this happening, although their hero selection will probably be minimal.

NudeRaider -- blessed innocent soul knows nothing of the strife we had before EUDs were discovered :teehee:

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings
[2026-6-20. : 6:15 pm]
Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.
[2026-6-20. : 3:47 pm]
NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.
[2026-6-20. : 3:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
