Even then, I think the Joker portrayed in comics echos the same mindset. They are nemesis', or, two sides of the same coin. One is for justice, one is for chaos. Batman can truly never kill the Joker because that would go against his beliefs, and the Joker would never kill Batman because he has too much fun toying with Batman and his feeble morales. There is one comic where in a dream world, Joker manages to kill Batman, or he doesn't exist, and the Joker goes insane because he has no real adversary: the Batman gives the Joker purpose. But yeah, that's what I think at least.

The joker portrayed in the Dark Knight movie is not the real joker. Try the 1989 movie, or even the cartoon, or the comics or something. The Joker wants the last laugh.The TDK joker was meant to be plausible, at least.
