Strange player color behavior

In typical UMS maps, P1-P8 by default is Red, Blue, Teal, Purple, Orange, Brown, White, Yellow, in that order.

If I change any player, say P7, to a Custom RGB color, that's when the craziness begins:

- Any units owned by P9-P12 no longer show on the minimap
- In lobby when I host a game, Red is listed as my color in slot 1. If I move to slot 2, color shows Blue, slot 3, Teal...perfect. But if I switch to Force 2, my color permanently changes to "Random", which then makes it a random color in game too
- Exact behavior occurs even if I assign everyone a Custom RGB color. The game will honor the color and say "Map Selected" as long any player doesn't switch to a different force or switch to an observer slot and then back to a game slot.

Anyone have any insights on why this happens or how to prevent it? Seems overly complicated for simple color selection. Would love for the game to honor the exact color I assigned to each slot.

Side question: Why doesn't the Leaderboard show the right color either? If I change Red to say, Pale Green, it works just fine except for the Leaderboard, where it still shows Red. What gives?

None.

We do a little trolling

I don't know all the details behind it, but the short answer is that it was sloppily implemented and isn't a good system at all. It's sad because it would have been really nice to have the new colors work well. I personally use PColor in EE2 and select from the old 255 color palette which is limited, but it does have some fun options. This is a helpful resource for previewing the available colors: https://cafe.naver.com/edac/73202

My Projects:

Impossible Ultraviolet | Impossible UV 2 | Impossible UV 3
Mercenaries 2020 | Mercenaries III
Squad Defense

Legacy Projects (No guarantee of functionality in modern SC):

Pixel Adventure 2 | Space Snipers | Control the Ball

Yeah, I actually stumbled upon your PColor post before I posted this. Like most things, looks like EUD will have to come to the rescue to get what I want. Thanks.

NudeRaider -- blessed innocent soul knows nothing of the strife we had before EUDs were discovered :teehee:

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?

Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
