Grid movement system

A long time ago I started on an RPG, but I ran into a big problem.

You can see how i have rectangles cut out of the terrain, the idea is to have the player's vision centered on one rectangle at a time, and move screen to screen. So, when I move the player character, (such as the zealot in the picture), to the right most box of the screen, it would move him to the next box of terrain, and so on.

The problem was, back then, that I had worked on a ton of the terrain and the story and all that before working out the movement mechanics. Now, I want to start with the movement mechanics to save myself some frustration. I need some help creating a grid that will allow this type of movement to be possible.

I've tried working it out but I am not finding a solution. I recall somebody helping me with this in the past, but I never was able to get the result I wanted.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Are you looking for a system like this one?

Let me know what differences there are between the functionality of that system and the one you're hoping to create.

NudeRaider -- EUD actions, specifically. The conditions remained. Today we can even have actions again, but they're all virtualized/whitelisted (not sure on the actual technical implementation) so you can only use them for specific intended purposed, not arbitrary code injections.

NudeRaider -- I mean yes, maps - through EUDs - were theoretically able to do that as well, but that was patched quickly.

not the map, the editor

Symmetry -- I vaguely remember Voy doing some ACE back in the day, but I had no idea EUDs could do that kind of shit. I am very much catching up on the technology

Symmetry shouted: NudeRaider Is EUD editor capable of writing shit onto the player's harddrive? That seems like it would be dangerous
yeah an editor that isn't allowed to write files sounds rather pointless, so I'd assume it can. Like most other programs too btw. and yes, obviously that's dangerous, but also kinda necessary. MS introduced that virtualization for exactly that reason.

Ultraviolet -- I don't think so. I think they shut that shit down after 1.16, maybe even earlier

NudeRaider shouted: Symmetry I can't tell if it's relevant. You provided literally no context so I was providing an equally generic answer.
