Can you still change the player colors to black and light blue? I haven't seen any maps like that in a long time. What is tge easiest way to do this for newbs?

As mentioned here, using an editor like SCMDraft, you can go to Scenario > Map Description and change the color of the player to the value you want (or enter a number which gives a new color). Light blue is Cyan, which is player 12's color. The best color for black is 138, as discussed in this topic: http://www.staredit.net/topic/15678/.

Note that changing player colors only works for expansion maps (.scx). Vanilla maps (.scm) will ignore your changes.
