I need an external hard drive, preferably one of 1TB. I saw one on newegg for about $50 but the deal expired. I need a recommendation for one under about $75. Thanks.

I personally use a WD Elements 1.5TB. The 1TB version only cost 10$ less. It's my third WD Elements external and I'm pretty happy with them so far.

Quite frankly, the spinpoint f3 is the best drive on the market right now. At $0.055/GB, there are very very few drives which can beat that price/GB. If they do, they beat it with a 2 TB or 1.5 TB configuration or are at 5*00 RPM. It has better throughput (ie sequential read/write) than any other mainstream hard drive, including all of the caviar blacks, which often cost twice as much. The caviar blacks are better due to server related operations and general quality. Here's a crazy idea: get the spinpoint f3 for an internal, and convert your old hard drive into an external. If it's really old, it's IDE, in which case you can get a super cheap enclosure, and you can also better utilize the slow USB 2.0 interface (max is 40 MB/s, whereas spinpoint f3 can do 120 MB/s easy. Old hard drives cap at about 60 MB/s)..

If you don't want to deal with this shit:

$65 (was $50 just a few days ago).

To be honest, unless you need it now, black friday is coming up. It's pretty dumb not to wait until then, unless another $50 deal comes along.

Relatively ancient and inactive

Don't knock WD too much; I disabled it with a software update, don't get pestered anymore.

NimoStar -- If its any consolation, the human brain would still mop the floor with this bot if it wasn't limited by the mechanical interface
[05:34 pm]
NimoStar -- Well. The bot didn't come up with any new strategy. It just has superhuman micro. Hard to beat that. I reckon even the simplest dedicated chess engines are unbeatable for humans now.

that doesn't mean he was prepared. When humans come around with new strategies it often takes weeks until the pros figure out how to shut it down. Oh_Man that's certainly a way more convincing argument for micro being "too good to beat".
