Sunburns as well as tick/tick bites are among the most irritating and risky things that happen during summer. Many of us don't realize that pets can also be affected by these pests. Are our pets required to apply sunscreen or insect spray?
Sunburns can occur to pets! Pets with light colored fur and with shaved or short fur are more susceptible to sun's harmful rays but any animal can run into trouble after an afternoon spent basking in the sun. Applying a special sunscreen to your pet's nose and parts of the ear (call us for advice) can help prevent sunburn and reduce the chance of developing skin cancer. Creepy Crawlies- While fur coats can help but dogs and cats remain susceptible to being bitten by flies or mosquitoes, just like humans. In addition to being irritating bites by insects, they can also transmit illnesses like heartworm or West Nile Virus. There are a variety of insect repellents available however, which one is the most appropriate option for your pet?

Caveats and Concerns
When you apply products to your pet's skin and coat it is important to consider safety as the top priority.
Do not apply any insect repellent or sunscreen product for your pet that has not been specifically formulated for application on animals. Consumption of human-grade sunscreens or insect sprays could cause diarrhea, vomiting nausea, nausea, excess thirst, and drooling.
Before applying any insect bug spray be sure to read the instructions on the label. Certain products are unsafe to use on pets that are very young or elderly while others pose a risk for cats.
Be careful when using any substance near your pet's eyes, ears or the genitalia.
If your pet becomes depressed or weak, or has trouble coordinating following the use of a product we recommend you contact us immediately.
Use insecticides sparingly on pets who are old, young or expecting.
