Companies have been doing that for a while.

Softnyx makes tons of free to play games but they make all their money by selling items to players online. For people who have the money to waste ... cool. For people who don't ... the games are usually boring after a while.

EDIT: Also players always find ways of using Ebay to sell items and accounts online.

But the thing that struck me about this article is how it's presented... The system is tricking you into paying thousands of dollars just to stand a chance in PvP.
