A while back I made some templates to use on deepfriedmaps.com, a website by ayylmao. Basically the site creates terrain based on the rules that your example map(s) have. The results can be very cool and fun although it does have many issues in regards to how the terrain generates and ease of use. The simple explanation of how it works is that it uses the input maps as reference and generates a tile, it then starts generating adjacent tiles based on the reference maps. The site generates terrain based on the wave function collapse algorithm. Here's some examples I made using badlands and desert tilesets:

How to use:
1. Add your input .chk map(s) (NOT .scx)
2. Press "get rules" button
3. Press "do map" button
4. Download a map that looks cool.

Some things to note when using it:
  • You can use your own maps with blends as an example but there's no guarantee the blends will match up. These template maps were specifically made for the site and how it generates terrain.
  • It's normal if it gets stuck trying to generate terrain.
  • Larger map dimensions will take greater amounts of time to generate. There's also a larger chance of it getting stuck.
  • You can zoom in on the terrain with ctrl +/- or just zoom in your browser.

You can use the terrain for whatever you want.

Cool tech. Does it follow any pathing or walkability guidelines or will it just create a nook and crannies nightmare?

There is no pathing capabilities so it will depend solely on the input maps.

None.

The sword and the faith

I was able to create some really great stuff with this tool awhile back. One thing that helped me for using the generator on Badlands was to create my own asphalt road grid as part of my template for where I wanted paths, and then generate the rest of the map with null tiles. This is the best approach I can think of for making things that end up being usable rather than just aesthetically cool.

I don't want to spoil the full map so you can see this section here:

I'd love to see an improvement where there are some kind of sliders/weights that can be used to favor open ground, water, and things like that.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?

Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
