Cartography Artisan

cheese is evil! :kame:

Can't say I've experience people 'demonizing' food, interesting to hear people actually do it, though I do tend to laugh at the whole organic craze in general.

wth is starcraft

I don't disagree with what you're saying but I do have some responses. First off I want to acknowledge that carbs+protein = better muscle growth because one helps the other break down that energy into something the body uses for energy. I say that because I don't want anyone here thinking that I'm demonizing anything, I just think there's a lot of polarization on the topic of "what to eat" and like everything it is the polarization that ends up destroying any hopes of useful information. The other thing is - and I'm sure I'll bring this up again - humans suffer from a huge perception problem. "half a cup" to someone could really be two cups. Again, exercising more and eating less is the golden rule for weight loss. I can't stress that enough.

Imma let you finish but I just want to say...

Re: Gluten
Gluten is complex and hard for humans to break down. It is for this reason that gluten-rich foods, like bread, are really good when you're trying to store energy (carb loading with pasta for example). However for many people - specifically in the first world, where most of our lifestyles are sentient - we don't use that energy. It just sits there and converts into fat reserves because we don't need all that complex energy just sitting around. And gluten is incredibly hard on humans' digestive systems; amplified in those with celiac disease. The first thing I started cutting down on was pasta and bread; and anyone who wants to lose weight or wants to feel less groggy (because remember the energy from gluten products is hard to digest and it exhausts you) I would totally be for them cutting breads and pastas out of their diet.

Re: Natural Disasters and Diseases
There is a conspiracy theory that Lyme's Disease was manufactured by the US after WWII and it accidentally "broke out" of the research lab it was being developed in. I say conspiracy theory because I don't truly believe it, but I mention it becaue there's a lot of surrounding information that would lead to it being possible. One of the doctors supposedly working on the disease was someone we got from Nazi Germany who was known to be researching virus/germ warfare, for example, and there is documented proof that something similar was being researched at the time in his lab. As for Natural DIsasters, earthquakes/tremors have happened as a result of shitty toxic waste dumping standards and flooding does occur on occasion as a result of deforestation. There's a huge dam project in China that is slated to significantly ruin most of it's surrounding land, despite the fact that people live there.

Re: Food Processing and "Natural" means "healthy" and "unprocessed."
Okay this was a pet peeve of mine at Whole Foods. People didn't understand that pretty much everything could be considered processed. We had all sorts of sugary or salty treats, tons of ground meat, all that stuff that was natural or organic, but still processed. It actually goes back into what you say about people not wanting to cut things out of their diet...it's a lot of work to cook a meal from scratch. I'll be honest and say I never buy a whole chicken or cuts of beef to grind because the process grosses me out. I buy boneless chicken breasts and ground beef as convenience. Eating vegetarian is probably the easiest way to cut processed food out of your diet fast, but you can still fuck that up and make it unhealthy. For example, I'm making potato soup with carrots, asparagus, celery and green onion right now. But it's going to have whole milk added to it tomorrow so lots of fat, and all potatoes are are starch. Asparagus makes it smell good though~~

Re: Eating Less Meat
This is something I fell into as I started to cut back on carbs almost naturally. I stopped becoming interested in meat. I haven't had pork products in months or beef in probably a month. I just realized today I didn't eat any meat because I got my protein from other sources. So yea...cutting meat (specifically cheap meat, or meat made in cafeteria style dishes as those also usually have quite a bit of lard or fat). I grew up in a household that ate pork chops weekly and really crappy cuts of beef. Barely any chicken or turkey and hardly any fish. So I think after a while I just got tired of eat it. But I feel *awful* now when I eat pork or bacon, or when I order a greasy hamburger. I just feel bogged down and my energy is zapped.

Re: Low Carb/No Carb diets
I think everyone in the first world could benefit from eating less carbs. For some that might be low carbs. I think if you're trying to build muscle - and I think a lot of people are - you want some carbs. But you got to also remember that when you order a burrito from Chipotle probably half of that 1000-800 calories is going to be carbs from the tortillas and rice. And carbs being a comfort food makes people crave more carbs...so heavy carb diets I think are really awful for people and I think there is a huge perception problem with just how much of a meal is actually carbs. As for No Carbs (I'm assuming you're referring to keto, also known as the "atkins diet")...I've seen it work. I don't think it is exceptionally intelligent to do, but I've seen it work for people. I could never cut all carbs cold turkey. You're right when you start asking yourself how this is affecting someone to entirely remove an energy source from the picture. My friend did keto and he was moody as fuck for the first few weeks because of carb withdrawals. He said he underwent an entire attitude change as a result of removing them. He lost a decent amount of weight by doing it but has now switched to the simple calories in are less than calories used diet.

Re: Bacon Cheeseburger is not Hitler
Sounds like you're inferring the problem with the cheeseburger is the fact that it has gluten and red meat. While both of these carry their own risk (it's a burger so I doubt the meat is very lean, and gluten is that complex energy source) you're ignoring the great amount of fat that is associated with that meal. The mayo, the fried nature of the burger, the starchy french fries and the salt/grease associated with it. Also Taco bell...ew.

Re: Alcohol is okay
Pretty much any reputable source of information I find talking about dieting tells people to cut alcohol out or down from their diet. I don't think you're giving diets enough credit. All alcohol is is sugar and carbs.

Re: Free Range Vegan
looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool. You're not doing yourself any favors.

Re: Organic vs Natural
Organic is a federally regulated term (in the states). Natural is not. "Made with Organic Ingredients" has less organic ingredients to it than something named simply "Organic." The fines are hefty if used incorrectly.

Re: Companies that own everything
This is nothing new. I can guarantee someone in this thread who speeds past my thread will post a web diagram of how most companies are linked to giants like Kraft. The only company I really have a large issue with is Monsanto. But if you look at companies like Kraft or Pepsi that have a ton of subsidiaries you'll find out a lot of that is just utilizing the same delivery systems or chains; very little actually carry from one group to the next.

Re: Placebo Effect
I feel bogged down when I eat overly fatty foods, a lot of breads/pasta, or a ton of fatty meat. I don't think its a placebo effect. I know a lot of people do over do the placebo effect (trust me I used to work at Whole Foods, lol lots of idiots) but there is some merit to feeling like crap when you eat like crap.

Re: Tofu
Actually Tofu is kinda awful for you. Especially for men. Another processed food that somehow misses the stigma.

Anyways... lrn2research better. I don't actually think you do understand what you're eating. :kame:

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Did Ex say alcohol was good? I thought he was saying that cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, etc are things that people tend to abuse, while complaining about food being the source of their problems, when the things formerly mentioned are just as bad (if not worse).

The sword and the faith

I was not saying alcohol or any smoke-ables were good. My point was more these things are all bad, and people go "OH YEAH IM A VEGAN IM SO HEALTHY EXCUSE ME WHILE I GET A SMOKE AND IM GOING TO A PARTY TONIGHT TO GET WASTED." :P

Also Kame, thanks for taking the time to watch and give a good reply. I appreciate it. I have to get to bed as I work early tomorrow but I want to re-read your post tomorrow to see if there's anything I'd like to reply to. :)

The tl,dr; of it is that there's a lot of polarization and do your homework; it's easier to fight that way :P

"Preface Preface Preface Preface" Two minutes in and you're still apologizing for what you're about to say. Stopped watching.

Maybe if this topic blows up I can muster up some kind of will to watch the rest. I'll probably just skip to the 5:00 and cross my fingers.

Still Napping

Gluten's evolution was so it would be hard to digest. Turns out plants don't like being eaten.
