SENer Opinions

This is mainly a topic for my curiosity.

Here at the loving community SEN, we have many arguments! Arguments about God, arguments about gender, arguments about video games, arguments about sports, arguments about cooking, etc etc.

And from what I have observed (I have not observed much), people rarely actually have their opinion changed about a subject.

So, because I know all of you are procrastinating from doing something more important by reading this, settle my curiosity and tell me if you have ever viewed/participated in a SEN argument and had your opinion on the matter changed because of what someone posted. I want to know if someone's beliefs have actually been altered due to an argument/debate they had with someone. No bullshit like "I really didn't care about this matter, but what Vrael said really stood out to me!" but something like "I didn't believe in God ever, until I met Moose and I realized he must have been created by a God!" I am genuinely curious about how opinions have been changed via SEN and SENbates.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

By my nature I am staunch in my defense of certain topics until proven otherwise, at times playing devils advocate to further seek a greater logical truth. Thus if I seem like I have my opinion changed, that's likely not the case, I just may have a reason my original opinion can be ameliorated or possibly ignored.

I have never made a complete 180, and especially not on a serious topic because they are virtually undebatable. The people who would be swayed by an intellectual debate already agree with my side of the story, or can not be convinced that my arguments hold intellectual merit. I do not take much of a side in cases where I am uninformed, and do not consider having my views reversed a complete 180 (tantamount to "I really didn't care to know much about this matter").

This goes for all of my online aliases more than just SEN, as I keep out of SD, LD, and null for lack of interest.

Just Here For The Pie

I have never had by beliefs changed, but my ideas are constantly changing, thanks to SEN.

I've done it to others.

>be faceless void >mfw I have no face

I changed my mind about the whole "why is it socially acceptable to pick on christians" topic, particularly from what CaptainWill said about the subject, if I recall correctly.

Red classic.

"In short, their absurdities are so extreme that it is painful even to quote them."

I'm pretty sure I have changed my opinion, or at least found new ideas. If you consider yesterday's debate in the shoutbox about labor unions, I agreed with something Aristocrat said that I hadn't previously thought too hard about. Does that count?

Win by luck, lose by skill.

I learn a great deal of new things talking to others and lurking topics here on SEN, but my fundamental beliefs generally remain unswayed.

Sacrieur was saying that emotions were a drain on his ability to do things. I convinced him that emotions are the reason we do things with logicz.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

I've already talked about this in the shoutbox, so I'll just quote that:
Quote from Roy
The goal of a debate is to present your case as articulately and clearly as possible. The opposing side will never just be "won over," but if you're right, it should plant a seed in their mind in the future, and they will reflect back on the conversation and think, "You know, he had a point there" or "Maybe I wasn't right after all." That's the only form of victory you'll likely see.
It's not just because it's a forum setting.

I had a nice discussion with Vrael on whether it was possible to be in a state of pure agnosticism. I've ended up agreeing with him that it is possible. So to answer your question: yes.

Roy, I declare you the Most Reasonable Man on SEN. I didn't think it was realistically possible to change an opinion on SEN. Mind you, this declaration is because you're open to the idea, not because it happens to be me who changed whatever opinion you had about the topic.

I'm in a state of pure agnosticism, assuming that's possible.

I've gotten myself lost playing devils advocate over the years. I've forgotten what I've really believed in.

No firm ground left to stand on.

People will quote Aristotle "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
But I found Orwell most wise saying "When a man wears a mask, his face grows to fit it."

I've created too many different faces for too many different made up problems.

To answer your question: No.
I just put more cuts, or smooth more edges to whatever mask I'm wearing.

Maybe you shouldn't speak up for the devil.

SENbetes: prolonged exposure, or exposure in high doses, causes your body to stop producing enough 'give a fuck' to properly metabolize SEN.

I've changed my mind about a lot of things since coming here, but not because of coming here. Also, JesusFreak changed his mind about Jesus, which was very amusing.
