How to Find a Roommate

Hopefully I won't get trolled too hard, but...

I need to find a roommate for college. The university that I plan on attending has a system for finding roommates, but the questionnaire isn't specific enough to get a good idea of what the other person is like. Plus, they don't auto-assign roommates, so I get greater flexibility in choosing.

So I'm making my own survey. What are some things I could ask? Furthermore, what are some things that I should look for in my roommate? (I know I'm going to get "DECIDE WHAT YOU THINK IS IMPORTANT, HERP DERP" but I'm probably going to forget something important.)

By the way, I'm not gay.

So far I'm planning on having questions over:
Adjectives that describe yourself.
What do you like to do for fun? (Sports, video games, etc.)
Favorite foods?
Alcohol/Drug use?

Win by luck, lose by skill.

Music they listen to?
Would suck to get stuck with someone who listens to crappy pop music all the time.

None.

Master has given Dobby a doctorate! Dobby is free!

I know this sounds obvious, but at least make sure you two have something in common. An interest in computer gaming, perhaps? Music, perchance? Regardless of what it is or how many things you have in common, you're going to have nothing to talk about if you two are nothing alike~my freshman year was weird as hell because my roommate and I were both quiet individuals, and we hardly talked at all. We didn't hate each other, which is good I suppose, but we never really knew each other.

So they require you to choose a roommate from your pool of potential roommates that they decide on from their survey? That seems absolutely obnoxious. Regardless, some important things you probably want to know about your potential roommate:
-Room tidiness/organization habits
-Preferred sleep schedule
-Expected major
-Preferred room temperature
-Preferred volume of music, TV, etc.
-Foods liked/disliked and/or general diet

It might seem a little nitpicky, but it could very well be the little things that piss you off most in the long run.

Sleep Schedule, Drug/Alcohol use, organization habits are a must....those three things could kill you.

Depends on where you're living too. If its a dorm, the "keep your shit on your side of the room" rule usually works, even if the person is a complete slob. In an apartment with shared cooking ware and living room and stuff, not so much. You want to find someone who does things that won't bug you enough to drive you mad, because everyone will do SOMETHING that bugs you. Maybe they need the room two or three times a week when their gf comes over, maybe they leave their shit all over, maybe every time they get back after class they let out a fart they've been holding in all day, maybe they insist on getting wasted every night.

Some of the standard things above can be useful for finding red flags, but from a lot of experience you are not going to be able to judge well based only on a questionnaire or online conversation. There isn't really much substitute for meeting people in person, and even barring that, talking to someone for a whole week. So at the end of the day, be chill and hope you get lucky. Usually it's not too big of a deal.

You don't already know anyone else who is going to that college?

I honestly prefer living alone because you are allowed to exercise far more freedom in doing things. Not to mention you won't be woken up by their alarm or be kept up by their late-night exam cramming.

I have a friend that wants to room with me but I don't think we'd make great roommates.

They only have a limited amount of single dorms, so I'm not expecting to get one. Plus they cost more.

Are you going to the University of Texas at Austin or some other university? I remember you mentioning UT in some other thread. Because if it's UT I can give some tips

A lot of good recommendations in previous posts!

Anyway, what are YOU passionate about? Whatever that is, see if you can find somebody else who shares that same passion. Also, try and find somebody with the same major as you. You guys will be able to work/study together, help each other out, suggest professors, maybe take some of the same classes. College can be scary without a social circle, especially if you don't get one going early.

Agreed.

And it's worth the extra, really.

If you can/want to afford it. I lived alone for the majority of this semester, though because my roommate transferred over and it took a while for anyone to request a room change. So, if you really want to live alone, but not have to pay for it, try to find someone that's transferring.
