Either I'm like technologically illiterate when it comes to recording things, or all recording programs suck.
I wanna record my desktop and Starcraft in the same video, but I can't find a program that does both. Fraps works with starcraft, but I can't get the damn thing to record my desktop even with "Windows Aero Desktop" or whatever checked. It just does not record my desktop. I got camtasia and that records my desktop just fine and all, but when I record starcraft with it, it's just a black screen with audio. -_- Anyone know why Fraps isn't working properly or how I can get camtasia to record the game properly? Or what other recording programs are there that do both well?
Oh also, there's one toher thing I wanted to ask. I want to record my mic and my stereo mix at the same time, and camtasia seems to do this well. But what about other programs? I can't even get fraps to detect my mic that's plugged into the USB port (It just says whatever the sound card is), and even if I could get it to work, would I be able to record both sounds (stereo and mic)?
Fraps can record stereo mix and the mic just fine. Make sure the mic is set to your default device in windows. Camtasia is a buggy piece of shit, good luck getting it to co-operate (though personally I can record both desktop and BW at once fine with it, fuck if I know why it randomly blacks out the entire screen for 5-10 seconds though).

Well I got it to record my desktop (apparently v3.2 isn't new enough to record my shit >_>), but now I can't figure out how to record both my desktop and starcraft. If I start recording my desktop and then open starcraft, fraps will just keep a picture of my desktop up while the starcraft sounds play in the background. How can I get to the video to switch over to starcraft when I play it?
Fraps hooks onto apps, so it won't be able to see both of them at once. Why do you need both?

I wanna make a tutorial video on how to do basic modding for my contest (you'll probably laugh at it lollolo), so I wanna show people what to do in winmpq, and then I want to run starcraft and show them what they can change. But I guess I'll just do what pr0nogo said and just start/stop when I switch between desktop/starcraft. ;\

I've had the same problem for a very long time and no recording device is perfect or even remotely good epically the free ones.
The best 2 I've have found is Camtasia and Fraps but both those have some major flaws.
The best free ones are camtasia and hypercam and those are both heavily limited and require the right settings to work properly.
