I've estranged at the fact two perfectly good discussion topics were turned into spam topics (oil, America's deficit)
Why do trolls do these things... maybe is some kind of deep seeded need for something (attention?). Or maybe they just want to see what peoples reactions are. Possible but unlikely is the fact that there post was an accidental troll (which i have done(If it gets locked i consider it partly trolling))
Any who your thoughts?
None.
"Turned into spam topics" is sort of a misnomer when referring to the "America's deficit" topic, as Killer seemed to have no interest to have an actual discussion on the matter from the start. That one was a spam topic from the start, and even though I gave him the benefit of the doubt at first, he didn't fail to prove that fact.
I always assume most people troll because they think its fun to trick people or they want the negative attention.
Also, I don't think the concept of "accidental trolling" is possible as trolling always seems like a purposeful act. Your topics that get closed aren't really for trolling. The fact that you think the "America's deficit" topic was perfectly fine and eventually turned to spam is probably closer to the reason why your topics get closed.

I think I've explained this to Tempz earlier in the shoutbox. It is impossible to accidentally troll by definition.
Is this topic a psychological discussion on trolling? The general notion is "for the lulz," meaning people get enjoyment out of manipulating the emotions of others, and they do it purely to have fun. There are other reasons for trolling, but the most significant is for entertainment.
Topics get locked when they serve no purpose. If there's no conversational value in a topic, it devolves into spam.

The oil post didn't really get 'trolled' anyway. It simply went grossly off topic onto nuclear power. Didn't help that the original post started talking about water, either.
It seems no one here cares about peak oil enough to talk about it, despite it being the most pressing concern the human race faces in the next 30-40 years (the impacts will be felt more quickly than climate change).

We'd rather hide from the scary monster in the closet than face it and find that it's a sweater mommy forgot in there.

I don't care to talk to SEN about it, because its the same old tired perspectives.

Relatively ancient and inactive
QQ Tempz. Does the trolling enmadden you?
Also, L2English. You used 'estranged' incorrectly.

When somebody wants to add their voice to the conversation but has nothing to contribute to the relevance of the subject it is here, on the Internet, considered 'spam'. Yet, in real life, it is merely changing the subject.
In some cases, those who were engaged in the initial topic can see that this person is unfamiliar with the matter pertaining to the original conversation, and will drop the whole thing to follow this ice-breaker. Maybe, as their spin-off talk grows, it will find a way to circle back to the previous discussion, but I digress.
This is the Internet. Politeness and trustworthiness do not exist, silly me.
There will always be someone to break a discussion because they simply do not care, but they will have some sort of follow-up to their uninterested. Sadly, this follow-up never has anything to do with 'leaving people alone', God forbid.
So we have spam. Live it, love it, laugh at it, swim in it. It is going nowhere anytime soon.
The sad part is, those who were engaged in the initial topic are usually the ones that twist it the most.

Well I never! I scoff at thee, and bid thee adieu. I ask thee, before our next meeting, that thou learn to curb thy tongue of such generalization.
I've half a mind to report this to a moderator... we have a 'Post Your Pix' thread already, Cecil. You should know better.

The better question is: Why is moderation allowing it?

Tempz I already told you I accidentally moved the Oil topic to nowhere, then DevliN put it in the LD. About the other topic, I don't remember that one. Also if people are being jerks to you, first figure out whether they are right or wrong. If they are honestly wrong, move and and let them be. If they are right, move on and let them be, but you should also put effort into changing whatever they were right about. This is because.. well, they are right if they are right.

I'd say we aren't allowing it (or at least I'm not as I seem to be the main one locking them.
And this topic is getting out of hand, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo locked.
