So i want a image i made to appear on the screen. Ive got the .dds file but its not split up like this: http://www.galaxywiki.net/wiki/Dialog_Background
Does it have to be cut up like this? Cant i just have a imported image displayed?? why is it so complex???
Can i just make a .tga and use that?
Ive attached my image as well

You do have to cut it up to use it as the article suggests; I think if you just want it as a dialog background you can keep it how it is. You can use tga as long as you rename it to .dds before you import it.

Red classic.

well i am so confused as in how to cut it up, and if i use the dds file as it is, it gets distorted.

Open up your image in one window in your image editing program. Open up the cut up image from the article in another window. Select each part as the wiki displays and paste it into the correct area until your image is cut up. Then when used as a dialog background, starcraft II will move the parts around until it is correctly displayed.

They designed it so that one image can be used for the entire dialog without resizing issues. It really isn't that complex, and the article explains it fairly well. I tried my best to write it as simply as possible. Here's what it would have to look like ultimately:

One thing to note, though, is that unless your dialog is the same size as your posted image, it will not look that great as the top, bottom, left, and right sides will look awful when repeating (as seen int he image above). You'd be better off hiding the dialog background and creating that image as a dialog item (image) instead.

Thats the answer I'm looking for. i just wanted to place an image on the screen. SO simple!
But no i understand cutting up the image now, it is kinda complex at first but makes sense in the end. Thanks

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?

Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
