Vrael's The Tenebrous won first place for the judge's pick. I don't know who won second and third place. xYoshix's Fallen Memories won the user's choice award.

I was thinking of making a rpg with one player, saves a lot of work, amirite?
And opens the door to awesome EUDs like mouse position and key press detection.
That sounds stupid, I don't need gimmicks to make my map good. I was thinking about making the map awesome based purely on a story driven narrative, full of betrayal and heroism I don't want to use EUDs and key press detection. :(

String limit is something to be wary of. I found I had to butcher my storyline pretty badly in order to not go over the limit.

You should really prioritize gameplay over storyline imo. One of my clan members/testers summed it up quite well actually. "If we want to read a book, we'll friggin read a book. We are here to play games!"

Thankfully, there are at least a few ways to lessen the impact of the string limit...

My solution for Starline is borrowed from a fairly well-known EV Override plug-in. Those who know what I am talking about will know what I mean. I'm sure plenty of people will hate my map for using it, but as such people would probably find other reasons to hate it anyway, I'm not bothered.

 Along with minerals, there's been a Starcraft key added to a pot. And no, there is no Brood War key. It's just the original Starcraft that comes with a key. That's what lil-inferno meant when he posted it in the OP; he just wrote it wrong. ;o

Yeah but it speaks volumes about your creativity and skill if you can evoke emotion through such a simple medium such as a Starcraft I map. :P Anyone can make a fun map, but not everyone can make an emotional story. ;) Keep in mind that it's still an RPG, but it'll be heavy on emotion and drama.

Having an inventory system that works on key press would be better than having to hotkey a unit or units located in a corner of the map. My comment was saying that you could improve gameplay if needed by implementing these single-player triggers if you're working on a single-player map. I don't know if you took what I said the wrong way or if you took offense for some reason (such as not knowing how to use EUDs), but you shouldn't shun possibility.

????

I thought there was no way to bypass the string limit save modding?

I never said anything about bypassing it entirely, only about reducing the effect that it has on the amount of text you can have for your storyline. If you want to know any more than that, you'll have to try and track down the source that I was referring to...well, that, or wait until next January and see it in Starline. :P

Master has given Dobby a doctorate! Dobby is free!

You can't pass the string limit and save the map, IIRC.

Jan 27 2011, 4:02 pm Kaias Post #133

You can bypass the string # limit (1024), you can't bypass the string byte limit.

Saves just fine.

I am happy to announce, I will return to the good ole map editor to enter this contest. And finally complete my Magnum Opus RPG. I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

A map based on the short story by Harlan Ellison, of a super computer named AM that has obliterated the human race and takes the last 5 humans on earth and tortures them for 109 years. The humans don't know why AM hates them so much, but they're about to find out, AM has constructed a game for each of the 5 characters for them to play where they must confront their personal demons and their fatal flaws.

It will be an epic tale full of disturbing and mature themes I'm sure you'll like it :)

You're going to play all three finished maps?!

:awesome:

Damn straight. In fact I think the winner of last years Last Stand RPG Contest was Tenebrous which wasn't even complete. There were other pearls as well such as Catalycsm, Wonder, Lost Souls Ultimo, Lost Souls Cecil. All highly cool RPGs, all incomplete!

Jan 30 2011, 2:37 am Derqua Post #140

My plans are for a map with 3 story lines tied around each other yet still individual from the others, most of the map is done, just gotta get triggers done :S.

Symmetry -- Man I wish we had this tech back in the day when people played ums lmao
[2026-7-16. : 6:28 am]
NudeRaider -- EUD actions, specifically. The conditions remained. Today we can even have actions again, but they're all virtualized/whitelisted (not sure on the actual technical implementation) so you can only use them for specific intended purposed, not arbitrary code injections.
[2026-7-16. : 6:26 am]
NudeRaider -- I mean yes, maps - through EUDs - were theoretically able to do that as well, but that was patched quickly.

Symmetry shouted: Ohhh imagine a SC map that could delete itself
not the map, the editor
[2026-7-16. : 2:28 am]
Symmetry -- I vaguely remember Voy doing some ACE back in the day, but I had no idea EUDs could do that kind of shit. I am very much catching up on the technology

Symmetry shouted: NudeRaider Is EUD editor capable of writing shit onto the player's harddrive? That seems like it would be dangerous
yeah an editor that isn't allowed to write files sounds rather pointless, so I'd assume it can. Like most other programs too btw. and yes, obviously that's dangerous, but also kinda necessary. MS introduced that virtualization for exactly that reason.
[2026-7-15. : 4:10 am]
Ultraviolet -- I don't think so. I think they shut that shit down after 1.16, maybe even earlier

Symmetry -- NudeRaider
NudeRaider shouted: Symmetry I can't tell if it's relevant. You provided literally no context so I was providing an equally generic answer.
