ATI's CCC is somehow broken

I was surfing the Internet trying to figure out how to get fixed ratio scaling for my ATI Radeon HD 4870 and somewhere along the way, I updated my driver and downloaded the Catalyst Control Centre software suite for Windows 7 64-bit.

Now, prior to downloading the CCC, I had found evidence of the CCC installed already. I try to run it, but it doesn't work. (Not surprising; I suspect a stupid, younger sibling tried to install it and configure it and broke it in the process.)

I shrug and proceed to attempt to install the CCC pack I just downloaded, in hopes that I could overwrite whatever garbage was present.

The installer extracts its necessary files and prompts me to install or uninstall its components. I click "install."

Lo and behold, the installer crashes, and Windows reports that the CCC didn't install correctly and it had stopped working unexpectedly.

I try the installer again, but this time, I select "uninstall."

Breaks again. (I try again with "install", and it breaks; expected that.)

So, now, I have reasons to believe I have a corrupt installation of CCC (or possibly a correct registry?) that is also preventing a fresh install of the CCC, and I can't find any method of uninstalling the garbage present.

How do I resolve this problem?

-

I'm using a Windows 7 64-bit with an updated driver for the ATI Radeon HD 4870.

Nothing else seems to be broken.

You can use windows restore to restore to an older point, you can try to run ccleaner and see if it can clean things up just by running the cleaner portion. After that, try fixing reg problems with ccleaner, then go find your CCC directory and just delete the damn thing if it's still there. Reboot, and try a reinstall of CCC.

None.

I'm guessing you've tried control panel to uninstall it?

I actually tried CCleaner first. Neither Windows nor CCleaner finds an uninstallation entry for it.

I think I would use a system restore as a last resort; I'm unsure as to how far I would have to restore (I have no idea) and reinstalling a whole bunch of shit doesn't appeal to me. I would rather use this as a last resort.

Gonna try to crush the CCC directories and reboot.

Are you suggesting using the CCleaner as a second method? Will do.

I've had nothing but trouble with the Catalyst Cockup Center. It's honestly the most annoying utility I've ever had to deal with. I love ATI cards but right now I've moved on to a nVidia GEForce 240... it's a treat!

Anyways, try the registry cleaner section of CCleaner after you've done a fresh run with the normal cleanse. Also, try and download the catalyst installer again. My problems and grief were caused because the download I received was corrupted.

You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your card too.

Failing all these steps, I'm afraid a system restore will have to be in order.

I think I'm going to try reinstalling the drivers.

And then I think I'll have to system restore (if that will even help; I have no idea how far back in time the problem started, and honestly, it's a problem that could have happened a year ago without me ever knowing it).

As a last resort, send your younger sibling to military school, and if your parents ask where he is say he ran away. Solves a lottta problems :3

As it turns out, the problem had something to do with VC++ 2005 compatability issues.

I'll uninstall all the VC++ stuff that I never use tomorrow morning and try again. If I don't reply within the next few days again, then the issue was solved (thanks to everyone who tried to help).

ew nvidia fuk dat shit brah

CCC is definitely a pain in the ass though, I can't get it to actually physically start up reliably across 10 different driver versions and two windows installations. Actually, driver installations and uninstallations were flat out bluescreening me for a while, but I blame windows for that. Apparently windows knocks up some DLLs and that's why I can't get the CCC to start.

Go into safe mode and purge everything related to the drivers and CCC manually and from the device manager. Then restart normally, with super slowmo software rendering because you have no drivers, and re-install fresh from scratch. If this still doesn't work I suggest their forums.

I've managed to install the ATI CCC.

Now, when I try to run the CCC...

Cool, it doesn't start up. :l

EDIT:

I came across a humorous acronym: All Those Installs.

It still doesn't work...

Thigh high affectionado

Good look making CCC working. I have an HD 4830, and the only time it EVER worked was with the CD that came in the box. Every other installer made it fuck up.

Protip:
use driversweeper.
Also, Instead of using CCC, just install the driver, then use ATi Tray Tools for your AA/AF/3dsettings/game profiles/overclocking. Has anyone here gotten the cursor bug yet?

fuck, honestly, I just want fixed ratio scaling for my old games.

Installed ATI Tray Tools, seems to be in working condition, though I've never played with anything this technical/low-level (if that's appropriate to say).

How to get fixed ratio scaling for full-screen stuff?

I used my monitor to fix ratios. Never had to do anything driver level.

It should be on your monitor's settings.

I wish I could use ATT, but 5xxx series isn't supported yet. It does virtually everything that CCC does, as well as a better game profile system, and toggleable on screen display with fps etc...

I haven't had an ATi card for a long time, but I never really bothered with CCC anyway. It seems like bloaty crap. I just installed the base drivers and then used ATI Tray Tools to do anything else I wanted (which was very minimal, anyway).

As for resolution scaling, I'm assuming you mean giving you 4:3 resolution on a widescreen monitor. This should be in your monitors option settings. It's unlikely you'll find a feature in a mainstream utility/app to do this as it should be being done by your monitor.

None.

The CCC is necessary if you want to play with AI settings or whatever (for crossfire) otherwise I've never really needed it except for forcing AF since virtually no recent game has options for AF even though they should.

My monitor is a piece of crap that uses a fucking button to switch between 4:3 and 16:9. :l

K, well, I guess this was all pretty much for naught.

Dec 6 2010, 4:58 am Lingie Post #19

I'll just leave this here.

Summary: If you want it to work, get fucking nVidia.

If you want to be non-conformist / prefer red cards / liked more by Ex / your shit not to ever work, or be useless in trying to do anything, get ATi.

My CCC is useless, drivers won't update my crap, but lo and behold, as I watch DM with an nVidia card that works so much better. I'll let you know if I ever find something that might be relevant.
