A small cheap and meaningful gift can often go a lot further than an [expensive] $18 gift. Then again, 18 bucks ain't that much, take her out for a meal. Better yet, buy the ingredients and cook her a nice meal. It's the perfect way to 1) spend money on a girl, 2) make your intentions clear and 3) has little chance of failure.
