SC2 Custom Content

I am interested in some input on what the SC2 community is looking for in terms of web services. The mapping and moding communities of Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and even World of Warcraft have always been close to my heart. I don’t know of any other game where strong user-made content is so prevalent. If Starcraft 2 is even partly successful, it will create an explosion of maps, mini-games and full-conversions that will extend the game far beyond the normal game modes.

Blizzard does not manage all this content, and while that is part of what makes player-made content great, it means external sites and communities need to fill in the gaps. I am more curious to hear about what you think.

What are the gaps or pain-points when it comes to maps and custom content?

The question is what specifically would you like to see?

Google-map style preview of custom maps?
Videos of maps?
Videos of map replays?
Forum signatures to show off your map?
Multi-language support?
Map developer rewards?
Events / Contests?

Don’t let technology, or what has been done so far, limit your ideas here – I would love to hear them all. Just please keep the discussions positive and forward thinking.

Thanks, and I look forward to your input

If you're able to do this, it'd be awesome!
I know there were some underground discussions about such a feature for SEN.
If you can work it out, we'd be glad to use your code! ;)

So ya, let people actually move around the map exactly as in they were in GE: wheel to zoom, Ctrl to rotate, etc.

For melee maps, I can understand how that would be a huge plus. But imo custom maps will definitely need replays and gameplay videos more than a Google Map-style preview.

As far as I know, we're going to need some hosting site for major SC2 projects. I don't know whether SEN or SC2Mapster will be up to the task, though. I mean, some of these projects could go into the gigabytes if people are going overboard on custom models, sounds, skins, textures, and game features.

Payne,
The reason I put google map previewing on the list is because we really want to see how interested people are before we implement it.

If this were done, how useful would it be to be able to drop markers and paths on the map and be able to share it with friends?

ImagoDeo,

Interesting. I didn't realize there was a need for project space hosting.
I have done some group projects before. What makes a SC2 map project different from your standard SVN repo + wiki?

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?

Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new

Oh_Man -- makes me wonder if SEN knows anything about the topic
