I find this rather disgusting; I read a while ago that, statistically, more children die in Russia than abroad, and most of those who go unadopted lead rather unproductive lives.
This is why free media + democracy (in its current form, at least) is dangerous. They can create a story out of nothing, get random idiots enraged, and it becomes politically advantageous to go along with it.

It seems to me there is a fad among americans to adopt russian children like some exotic animals; call me crazy, but this isn't the first drama around russian kids adopted in the US.

It isn't. Russians get worked up over the issue. However, two thousand children being adopted over the course of many years isn't going to hurt the demographics significantly, the children will on average do more and be happier than they would be in Russia, etc. I heard more about this today, and apparently they're just suspending it until they could work out official rules for adoption with United States representatives. Still, the populism that brought this issue to a forefront is a disgrace. It seems to be worse than it is in the U.S. Not the aspect of the US I hoped Russia would be copying. Making such a huge deal over one rejection... and without the knowledge of whether the adoption agency lied... if I had wanted to adopt from Russia and found out that the child was a retard when he arrived, I'd 'disown' him too.
