I've never taken any relationship seriously, but a few of my relationships (including current) could be described as serious.

A serious relationship, to me, means that both partners are completely committed to each other's well-being, regardless of distance (although higher distances complicate things), gender, race, actual physical intimacy, etc. In my opinion, the only thing that really matters is that the two (or more ) individuals are, without limit, willing to do anything for each other. Basically, that they love each other, and aren't just after t3h b00bs, or other parts, although that may initially play a role.

Basically, something that very rarely occurs. Even in my relationship, I know I'm not fully committed. When I'm ready, I'll take the step...not before, especially if others pressure me. If you have to have someone tell you to marry a girl (or guy ), you are definitely not ready for a big step like sharing everything in your life with said partner.

TL,DR: read the damn thing.

When sex becomes something that you don't even request, hint at or any kind of deviation of those two is a good starting indicator.

When you are able to confidently talk shit about eachothers' family and laugh about it.

When you share a piece of spaghetti.

But in all seriousness, a serious relationship is hard to define by one person's opinion. Everyone has a different comfort level and it could even be on a completely different game, in comparison to a different level. For me, it is pretty much the first two. Personally, when my girlfriend starts calling/texting me outside of her own convenience or asks for my advice on things she didn't before, I find it a serious relationship.

Giving someone the power to break your heart and trusting them not to.
