Hypocrisy is basically the application of different standards or policies to similar scenarios depending on the identity of those scenarios (whether they be people, events, countries, etc). That's my weird definition of it. I consider it to be a part of being a human being, but also consider it to be very noticable by oneself and correctable.

Anyway, how hypocritical do you consider yourself or the others around to be? Any stories about hypocrisy you'd like to vent about? Did I completely mess up in my definition of hypocrisy? Tell all!

Now, I know very few people would label themselves as horrible hypocrites, and I am not amoung the few there. I do, however, sometimes notice my hypocrisy and try to correct it. I'm interested in politics and geopolitics (and a ton of other stuff), and I can be a hypocrite there - judging democrats or republicans differently in favor of democrats, or taking identical situations in Russia and the US and noting how much lower my expectations for the former are. On SEN, I don't consider myself to have ever been a hypocrite. The only thing I remember saying is that Moose must be annoyed that annoying people annoyingly pester him to judge the moderation, but despite it apparently being taken seriously, I meant that as a joke. When arguing in SD or, now, Null, I sometimes use weaker arguments that I see the flaws in, expecting, (usually) correctly, that no one else would see those flaws. Because I can't think of a better argument, naturally; if I had a bulletproof one, I'd use it. Still, I suppose arguing despite seeing your own slightly flawed argument can be considered a form of hypocrisy.

I actively try to not be a hypocrite, since both my parents are.. :\ I've found that people who cannot correctly use logic (no have incorrect logic, but rather choose not to use it) are usually huge hypocrites. Maybe it's just me...

I'd still like an explanation for why you call me a hypocrit all the time. I know you tried to tell me once before, but perhaps I'm daft, or perhaps I've simply forgotten. Seems like this would be an appropriate place for such a discussion.

I'll tell you over PM tomorrow. As part of my 'new' always-right, ideal-person Centreri, I don't feel it necessary to do it in public, and will PM it to you so we can discuss it privately. I don't want to derail this thread. Feel free to tell me if you want me to stick it here.

Zoan -- of course it isn't full understanding. You could ask "is the mechanism by which this counterexample blows up the ONLY mechanism possible for an initial configuration to blow up?"

Zoan -- ppl do it all the time in PDEs

Heinermann shouted: it also didn't solve that problem but hey as long as the investors are pleased
Constructing a counterexample is answering the question: "Is Navier Stokes well posed?" in the negative
[05:44 pm]
NudeRaider -- I only heard about it, didn't any news article, so what did it do then?
