You don't need to run multiple applications or plug in a USB device. Steve said so.

I'm confused at the niche Apple's trying to cover here. It's like a gimped laptop. iPods are nice because they are small and fit in your pocket, but with something like this, it'd be pretty big to lug around. But I suppose if it works as a good tablet, that is what it's main purpose was I think?

Basically its a really nifty version of one of these: http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&safe=active&resnum=0&q=Portable+ebook+reader&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=xK5hS5DfIoKcswOy4NXACw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCIQrQQwAA

But it's so much more than an e-reader lol.

I personally lke it. There's a lot more of a possibility of cool apps with this thing. Also, with the whole netbook thing, it 1. is actually lighter than most netbooks, if the figures they gave out are correct, and 2. actually might have a lot more processing power. It also has hi-def movie support, which is a big step up from most netbooks.

But netbooks can also have more than one program run simultaneously. :P

I personally dont see much of a point in running more than one app at a time. count up all the times in a day where, on a netbook, you have mre than one program open... It's really not that many times. And switching between internet and email taking .2 seconds longer won't really bother me.

Woah

I'm seeing this as more of a replacement to a laptop. In his keynote, Jobs made it clear that this was supposed to be better than a smart phone or a laptop.

Oh and I forgot about the lack of Flash on it.

No flash? qq. This also seems like a replacement to a laptop too, because if you're a college kid, you can't lug around a notebook AND an iPad, you're going to only have to take one. Same with most business people, it's not very convenient to carry both the notebook and the iPad.

It isn't a replacement for the laptop at all. You don't have any freedom on the device since you can't just download programs- everything you put on it is run solely through the App Store. You can't Multi-task and it doesn't have a USB port. There is no stylus so you loose accuracy- forcing all Applications to be clunky (Read: Massive buttons) and eliminating practical use for graphic design (unless you're into finger painting). No flash isolates it from much of its potential as a glorified video player (IE No Hulu). It doesn't fit in your pocket, which makes it no more portable than a laptop.

I don't even know how you could consider it replacing a laptop while it retains a fraction of the functionality, use and power a laptop provides. In fact its only use as a device is for people to have lounging around the house, and for that price it isn't at all worth it. Apart from that it is only good for making you look like a tool in public and at best ignorant.

Exactly, it's not supposed to be a replacement for a laptop, but a replacement for a netbook. Netbooks usually have few usb ports, no power for graphic design, and it's hard to multitask on a netbook due to low processing speeds.

He also states its supposed to "bridge the gap" between laptops and cell phones, making it less restricted than an cellphone, but also smaller than a laptop.

No, he's fooling most of the people who will end up buying it. And from his viewpoint, that's what matters ;D

How is this not as good as a smartphone? It can do A LOT more than a smart phone can, besides the actual phone conversation part of it.

I say it's a replacement to the laptop because I don't expect to bring both the iPad and laptop with me everywhere. If I'm bringing one of my electronic devices, I need to choose between my laptop and iPad. Bringing my iPhone or touch isn't a big deal because they're compact, but bringing an iPad? It acts like a replacement in my mind, because I can't effectively carry them around everywhere. That's my issue at least, transportability.

In sense of space it IS a replacement.
In terms of everything else, it doesn't.

"A LOT more" is an overstatement; "doing about the same things more easily but less accessibly" is more accurate.

That's my point though, you can't take it in-place of your smart phone and if you have more than half a brain you wouldn't take it over your laptop/netbook.

It isn't a real replacement for a netbook either for many of the same reasons. No bridge is needed to be gapped.

You're trying to justify Apples actions rather than looking at it objectively. I have no qualms with Apple; if they develop a product that is useful I will get it.

I am looking at it objectively... I personally don't really like it, but there are some things being said that i don't agree with. Yeah, i agree that it really is missing a lot of the features it should have and that it is really lacking where it shouldnt be.

But it was designed to bridge the gap between smart phones and laptops. I do think that i'd rather have that than a netbook.
