BeDazed
BeDazed I don't map. I don't care.
You should be banned for those words. You are no help to SEN and many MANY more will agree.
Although I am all for more mappers, less nullers, and putting nullers at the low value they deserve in comparison, this is not an attitude I can support. Dazed was at times, (mainly earlier times I believe) very useful in the melee section and one of the reasons I went to BWMN to learn. Our melee section isn't much right now, I know a lot of you couldn't give a shit, you probably have it hidden and if you don't you probably don't check it often. To be honest, one of the last people who knows dick about balance in there is me, and I didn't get any of this knowledge at SEN. I got it over at BWMN, and that tells me we have an area in which we are lacking. Melee may not be SEN's focus, but some SC players may come here and wish to learn about melee mapping instead of UMS, or maybe they just want to discuss some recent events in the proleague.
We should not seek to limit ourselves until we do not have enough focus to go around. I feel there's a lot more potential right now if we can find some people who get things done. You may notice when I got promoted one of the things I jumped right on was cleaning up the clan section. I asked Moose and IP what needed doing and I did it. I didn't say I was going to, I didn't wait awhile, I didn't procrastinate, I just did it. I think statistically speaking a majority of maps, projects and tasks get put on the back burner around here, never to be seen again. Now I am guilty of this with many maps myself, and I'll be the first to say I could be doing more. I especially want to get more focused on the SENzine but I get paranoid that what I'm writing isn't what would go in there, isn't good enough, doesn't have the right focus. I procrastinate and then it doesn't get done. That's what I'm talking about.
I think we need to concentrate our efforts on providing resources when SC2 comes out. We need to be an open place of learning and acceptance. We are not going to master our editors over night, we are not going to be trigger and scripting specialists in a day. We are not going to be the 10 year strong players that we are right now and we need to realize that, and use it to our advantage. We will have opportunities to see what common problems are because we have SEN to come and discuss them. We can provide tools and instructions, little tricks or tweaks, whatever the SC2 player is going to need. We do not have just a website! We have SEN!
I have ventured to many SC sites, I have posted on Warboards, I have discussed balance on Broodwarmaps.net, I have watched the proleague VODs on Teamliquid, and I have even looked upon the pages of SC2gg.net. What these sites have in common, is that when they do not have the answer, when they cannot meet the needs of a member regarding UMS, for the most part, the direct them here. I have seen it, I have been the one directing, but I have also had to direct melee focused players to them as well. Now the former works in our favor but the latter in theirs and that is why our melee resources have to improve. We should never have to direct anyone to a page that doesn't start with http://www.staredit.net/ , and we should never rest while another site has any information or expertise we do not.
Now I know a lot of us think that we have reached our potential in contributions. We think we don't have the time, the skills, to help in an area we have not tried. If you were asked what you knew about building something, and you said nothing, how would you know you couldn't build it? We can all do more, it is a matter of giving ourselves the proper motivation and not accepting our own excuses and procrastination. I want to finish my SENzine contribution, but have you even planned to make one? Why not? Why not go into that project forum right now and see if you could help? When's the last time you finished a map? Can you even remember? Why not make one now? What is stopping you?
In the time it took you to read this post, I want you to think of all the things you could have done. From uploading something to the DB, to editing the wiki, to making a post in a mapping/modding focused forum. I will no longer accept your excuses of time any more than I will accept mine, there is always work to be done, and most of it does not require a coder, an image expert or a brain surgeon to do it. The truth is you are stopping yourself and so if you voted yes on that poll I want you to consider what you can do for SEN. Because just by being here, just by granting you the page you glance at right now, SEN has already done for you.
