As Im learning how to map trigger, im learning more ways to terrain creatively. Here are some snapshots of cool terraining i've done. I'm sure some of these have been done before but creating these by myself makes me feel more appreciative of how beautiful you can make a map appear.

picture is too big but its suppose to look like a spiral

I made a dock using edges of bridges and dirt.

Its suppose to be like a Mayan pyramid. When u actually play the map, u really feel like ur climbing up and up.

What are some maps that you guys have come across that really pushes terrain making to the limit? I'd like to play some of these maps to get some ideas. I will also continue reading these posts regarding terrain.

side note: the dock picture (putting null terrain instead of water) reminds me of the End of Time area in Chrono Trigger.

I'm not gonna lie dude, these are all blocky when they truly don't need to be, admittedly, you have a few blends that would be impossible to fix, but a lot of them are just nasty looking, and not really very extended looking, it just looks like whenever anything got slightly difficult to blend you just gave up on it.

I think the major blend that you need to figure out is this one(sorry about the missing pics, will fix after school), it would make all the terrain you posted a LOT less blocky.

Speaking of which, falk, pngs are better for SC, due to 256 colors and lossless. use the pngout plugin on irfanview and they'll be smaller than a typical jpg, unless you drop the quality way down.

take a look at some maps around here, and you'll see how to use bridge tiles to blend high dirt->low dirt, etc...

While the concepts are nice, if there are any blocks, it just looks terrible.

Oh wow, I can't believe I put them as JPEGs, weird..

Wow, guys, take a look at the middle left of the last pic, where the single stair tile blends almost seamlessly with the bridge... I think he's on to something there.

Yeah, but it's still a ways off, and you still have to consider the grass to ruins blending..

Even if you incorporate that, stairs just don't blend well with bridge.
But, it's still interesting.

NudeRaider -- blessed innocent soul knows nothing of the strife we had before EUDs were discovered :teehee:

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.

NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new
