Well, I've been interested in getting into some modding, But ive ran into a few things, All the mods I make have to be playable with other people(that have the mod ofcourse) as these will mainly be for fun and will do lots of playing with friends, But Some tools like Firegraft need a older version of SC, but as far as I know, Downgrading SC to use them wouldn't allow for online play, since it would just patch itself when you log into bnet, So is there anyway to play these older versions and use these tool's online with friends?

More information on what it really is, and Does? And I guess im not going to deal with downgrading, since there is no easy way to go between old versions and 1.6.1 since fartys program only goes to 1.5.2 :/. And I don't want to be re-upgrading when going on b-net.

Farty's downgrader is a patching utility so that you can patch down to the appropriate version so Grafting can be done. I HIGHLY reccomend changing your opinion about grafting, as it's actually more clean a process than almost every other modded game I've tried to play *cough* GTA San Andreas *cough*, and you will be unable to modify the button sets on units.

Oh, and the bottom part is about adding private servers to your list of Battle.net gateways.

Basically, ShadowFlare's Realm is a server run by ShadowFlare (obviously) that doesn't upgrade SC. And you can go between old versions and the current one easily: Just connect to regular Bnet when you want to go back to the current patch.

Btw, you can't make anything better than a mediocre mod without grafting, because without it you're stuck with the default tech trees and button sets. (Button sets dictate which spells a unit can use or what a building can build, and a few other things like what a unit can research/upgrade and if it can Liftoff or build addons.)

Define mediocre. ;o Some'f my favorite mods have been non-'graft. Besides, 'graft mods often break UMS.

How and why would you play a mod in UMS? I don't think Ad Astras and Temple Siege (for example) mix very well...

The point of UMS is to come up with new gameplay for fun.

WUT.
As for "how"...
You load a mod, and play UMS with it? >_>
Srsly, like 9/10 of my games in Pressure Def have been with mods. Trying to figure out which units' changes are most rigged for a given map is fun. ;P Especially when enemies end up with bizarre features that have to be exploited/avoided/worked around.

she/her

I would like to suggest that if one were to frequently switch between playing on SF's server and BNet's, he or she would download the official patcher file from Blizzard's Support site for convenient switching (as in downloading the EXE file or otherwise).

Or you can upgrade Farty's program like I did. You add in some .mpqs and change the config file.

Dungeon Master

Or you can use BWAI downgrader.

http://www.broodwarai.com/tools/BWAIDowngrader%20v1.16.1.b.7z

(You'll need 7zip to open that one, I'll try to find one that's rar or zip...)

Ultraviolet -- I suppose we'll likely never know, but my guess would be that they already saw it operating successfully and there was no monetary incentive to finish the original work. And the dev cycle in old school Blizzard was so hectic, it's possible it just got forgotten about after the original game got released. Plus there's an element of existing MPQ files that were packaged with the original discs becoming outdated if they updated it. And it's not like they remade the original MPQs, they just made new ones for BW specifically

Oh_Man -- so that makes me think maybe the theory they are unfinished is not true and its a deliberate design decision, coz why not finish them wen ur making brood war?
[2026-6-21. : 4:25 am]
Oh_Man -- the thing is thos buildings are from classic. that means they went ahead and made brood war without ever finishing the 'unfinished' buildings

Ultraviolet -- Yeah he's talked about a lot of that stuff in his casts before. It seems plausible. Especially knowing how Blizzard of yesteryear operated.

NudeRaider -- to clarify: couldn't recall the behavior for every single Protoss building but I was aware the disparity exists.
[2026-6-20. : 3:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- Contained nothing new for me. Didn't know all building's behavior, but very much all unit's. Also Terran balance whine - also nothing new

Oh_Man -- makes me wonder if SEN knows anything about the topic
