Or how about just use windows? It works great. Or you can use UltraISO to make copies of discs in file format and run them from that.

You can try ImgBurn, very lightweight, does everything you need when it comes to burning stuff on disc (no suite of crappy program like Nero and such)

Nero Burning Rom outside the suite isn't that bad, its what I used to use and it worked proper every time.

Windows Media Player won't burn cd's properly for me either. I use Ashampoo Burning Studio. It allows dvd, mp3, audio, and file cd burning.
