Origins

The company was founded in 1917 and its beginnings mirrored Japan's growth. In the first half, Toto made products to meet the growing demand for modern, brand new urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to managing its supply chain and used the same approach for its sales process. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Toto has been able to continue to innovate with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group however it's actually a relatively straightforward rock outfit. The group started out as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of problems. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Luckily for Toto, they did with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band to-topia.com continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet format and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned on previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
