If you like arcade racing games then this is a must-play.
Any 'Split/Seconder' senner around? We should play an online match some time :)

How could you ever catch up to someone when they nuke you or w/e and flip your car to a complete halt? It just seems like hitting someone with one of those = gg.

It's not Dirt 2, it's an Arcade. If you wreck, you immediately respawn right on the track, but you'll also lose some (precious) seconds in the race.

What's most fun in Split/Second is exactly to try to screw everyone else up. And man, I gotta say, it's intense.

Shogun

I played the demo. It was great.

When you get blown up by one of the other racers, you lost a few seconds, but you still have a chance to get back in first place if you build up your meter thing and do the same to them.

I was looking forward to it for a while before it came out, until the demo was released. I didn't like the way they implemented the events, they seem so arbitrary, like they're just there for the sake of being there. Like the fact that a steel girder falling on your car only results in losing 2 seconds from the race, it's like a normal racing game except you have a power called "Delay other driver by a few seconds" that has some unrelated animation attached to the effect.

Then again, I'm not really a fan of normal racing games anyways, and the way this is the same as every other one except with the additional power described above results in me not being a fan of it either. As you said, if you like standard arcade racing games, you'll like this game. The ability to trigger events plays a minimal role in the outcome of the race.

The only racing game I really enjoy is the Wipeout series. If you kill someone in that race, they stay dead. Weapons actually have a purpose, and you can choose to play offensively or defensively. Skill in weapon usage can go a long way, but so can good racing skill, especially since even rubbing against walls reduces the integrity of your vehicle.

In my opinion, the gameplay in Split/Second is as lacking as any other arcade racing game. If they called it Stall-Out instead, and triggering an event either made an opponent's car stall or altered the course slightly, a lot less people would want to play it even though the gameplay would be identical. The big gimmick here is that they took the stalling ability and added an exploding animation to it. The only reason I see to play this over any other arcade racer is the visual effects, other than that it's the same old formula (though many people seem satisfied with that formula, so to each their own).

Azrael, I agree at some point. Split/Second, in overall, looks generic. It's not a game that I feel like playing for hours straight (unlike other arcades like Burnout Paradise). It provides entertainment for a short period of time, then you get bored or frustrated for not finishing on first after many tries. But it's always fun to play quick matches with friends online.

However, taking a decent look on the game, I don't think it's generic. It's got so many details that some of them took me a while to notice (like the spoilers of the cars coming out from behind when reaching a certain velocity). Split/Second looks gorgeous and its environments were pretty much well planned too. Also the magnitude of some destructions blew me away.
In the end, I think the only problem is the gameplay simplicity (I use only two buttons and two sticks for doing everything in the game), but it's still a decent arcade.

I'll give it that, the visuals are excellent.

Just keep in mind I'm the kind of person that buys Gran Turismo and spends 99% of the time getting licenses  I find standard arcade racing to grow tiring. I need the ability to kill my opponents to stay interested I guess lol. I think it'd have been great to have a mode like that in this game, where you have a health bar or something, and the super events insta-kill anyone caught in them. Now that I could have gotten into.

You should probably get 1st place before sharing your best run =P

Uhmm yeah, my bad I crashed near the end :P (I lost contact with the ground for a while so I couldn't turn the car)
Nevertheless, I was really amazed after this race, especially due to what happens @ 0:25: being clutched like a sandwich by two assholes, then everything goes boomy, they both crash on the moving giant rolls and I very luckly escape right in the middle.
I didn't care about not finishing first after all :)
