[2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- if you said "15th january' people would look at you funny, but probably understand.
[2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm]
Devourer -- yep
[2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- saying "january 15th" has one fewer 'of'. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm]
Devourer -- though I do not quite understand why not just "first (of) january"
[2014-8-13. : 5:52 pm]
NudeRaider -- That's the very question. Why not 15th of January?
[2014-8-13. : 5:51 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- instead of like "The first of January of 2014"
[2014-8-13. : 5:51 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- because in speech we say like "January first of twenty-fourteen", so that's how we write it
[2014-8-13. : 5:51 pm]
Devourer -- (other way round)
[2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm]
NudeRaider -- but yeah you know it's bad when you have to look up your measurement system.
[2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm]
Devourer -- but time, ok cool, we got days months and years. So we order them from most to least significant, which makes sense. How did you guys come up with "Month-Day-year"?
[2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- That's what all of the imperial measurements are. There's even way more like handbreadths, fingers, etc.
[2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm]
NudeRaider -- farty you are so wonderfully honest :D
[2014-8-13. : 5:50 pm]
Devourer -- You know, measuring sizes, when invented, it made sense to use like a foot or sth; you wouldn't have an idea of "a metre"
[2014-8-13. : 5:49 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Also yards aren't even really used all that much. I think they're used in like sports, but people pretty much stick to inches, feet and miles.
[2014-8-13. : 5:49 pm]
NudeRaider -- BUT YOU CAN DO IT!
[2014-8-13. : 5:49 pm]
NudeRaider -- Change is hard
[2014-8-13. : 5:49 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- To the point where off the top of my head I couldn't tell you how many feet or yards are in a mile. I have to look it up every time. xD
[2014-8-13. : 5:48 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- We're very aware of how arbitrary it is. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:48 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Same with our food labels being required to be in both US and metric
[2014-8-13. : 5:48 pm]
Devourer -- Do you guys actually ever think about your measure system and then realize how totally random that all is? Like I know you are used to it and you have learned it that way, but still
[2014-8-13. : 5:47 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- That's the idea, I'm pretty sure. They tried just switching once I guess and everyone was too steadfast and just refused. Having centimeters on rulers is a remnant of that. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:46 pm]
NudeRaider -- That's why I don't mean you as a person but you as a people. ;)
[2014-8-13. : 5:46 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- So actually I guess people might understand centimeters, since an inch is about 2.5 centimeters.
[2014-8-13. : 5:46 pm]
Devourer -- let the better system slowly invade your culture
[2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm]
Devourer -- <3 good
[2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- All of our rulers have centimeters on them
[2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm]
Devourer -- :O
[2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Here metrics is exclusively for scientific and medical measurements. We do learn it in school, but it's so far out of common usage that if you said something weighed x grams or was y centimeters, people would have to figure out conversions to even begin to understand (such as me, earlier)
[2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm]
NudeRaider -- I am not your father btw.
[2014-8-13. : 5:45 pm]
NudeRaider -- come to the light side of the force! You have it in you. I believe in you.
[2014-8-13. : 5:44 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- That's what we get for using (a variant of) Britain's measuring system. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- but one of the most sinful strawmans is to justify one's action by stating that it could be worse
[2014-8-13. : 5:43 pm]
NudeRaider -- I'll give you that Farty.
[2014-8-13. : 5:43 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Except if we did we'd end up like Britain. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:42 pm]
NudeRaider -- 2nd step is you acknowledge that only you have to power to change who your are. (Or what measurement you use :P)
[2014-8-13. : 5:42 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Britain is all screwed up. :P We have a system, and we stick to it. We're not so wishy-washy.
[2014-8-13. : 5:41 pm]
NudeRaider -- Good. First step. You recognize the bad habits.
[2014-8-13. : 5:41 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- or something. I don't know.
[2014-8-13. : 5:41 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Like they measure distance in miles, but length in meters.
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- And in Britain it's absolute hell because half the time they use metrics and the other half they use imperial. Or crazy archaic imperial (why would you measure in stone?!)
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
NudeRaider -- -.-
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
NudeRaider -- *toodles
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
NudeRaider -- doodles
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
NudeRaider -- I think my lack of sleep is showing
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Also you can't blame us, we took our measuring system from Britain and cut out all the useless ones. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:39 pm]
NudeRaider -- more like creepypasta
[2014-8-13. : 5:38 pm]
NudeRaider -- when do you stop commonly using miles, and even worse inches?
[2014-8-13. : 5:38 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- what, I copied and pasted that
[2014-8-13. : 5:38 pm]
NudeRaider -- that's meters for you YANKEE!
[2014-8-13. : 5:37 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- So the 1760 yards or 5280 feet is because all the measurements between (rod, chain, furlong) are no longer commonly used.
[2014-8-13. : 5:36 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- "A mile is a unit of length most commonly equivalent to 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards (about 1,609 metres)."
[2014-8-13. : 5:36 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- oh, "1.76", that's probably from 1760 yards in a mile.
[2014-8-13. : 5:36 pm]
NudeRaider -- fuck. my bad. can't read. It's 1760 yards
[2014-8-13. : 5:35 pm]
NudeRaider -- and the miles?
[2014-8-13. : 5:35 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Or 22 yards in a chain.
[2014-8-13. : 5:34 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- Here we go. There are 8 furlongs in a mile, 10 chains in a furlong, 4 rods in a chain, and 5.5 yards in a rod. :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:33 pm]
NudeRaider -- *you linked to
[2014-8-13. : 5:33 pm]
NudeRaider -- have you checked the picture it links? it says 1 mile = 1.76 km. Google says 1 mile = 1.61 km.
[2014-8-13. : 5:31 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- like there are US volume measurements and then Imperial volume measurements, and they are slightly off from eachother :P
[2014-8-13. : 5:31 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- UK might have some stupid mile or something.
[2014-8-13. : 5:31 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- What other two? We have one mile.
[2014-8-13. : 5:30 pm]
NudeRaider -- i know. but what about the other 2 miles?
[2014-8-13. : 5:29 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- and is specific to boats and airplanes
[2014-8-13. : 5:29 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- what, nautical mile is international
[2014-8-13. : 5:29 pm]
NudeRaider -- HOW MANY FRICKEN MILES DO YOU JOKELS HAVE?!
[2014-8-13. : 5:28 pm]
NudeRaider -- and then there's this: 1 nautical miles = 1.85200 kilometers
[2014-8-13. : 5:27 pm]
NudeRaider -- but I've seen that 1.76 km occasionally too
[2014-8-13. : 5:27 pm]
Devourer -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59LQw9bKeJ8&feature=youtu.be btw anyone knows this song? ;o
[2014-8-13. : 5:27 pm]
NudeRaider -- What's with that miles to km? Google tells me 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers
[2014-8-13. : 5:26 pm]
O)FaRTy1billion[MM] -- There's a bunch of archaic measurements between yard and mile. :P
