I think I fixed some of the blocks, and added some doodads to fill up the dirt.

It's too blocky for my liking, except for the middle left one.

Yeah a bit blocky, especially on the water. Water blockiness is really apparent ingame because of animation.

You mean the pillar one? I was just trying out different styles of pillars, then stumbled upon some tiles that fit together well and decided to try to make a scene or something.
edit: Have ruins ever been blended to dirt like this?

DarkenedFantasies -- Probably just didn't care. For example, at some point before release, they've updated the graphics of some of the Protoss buildings (Forge, CyberCore, Citadel, Observatory, Arbiter Tribunal), but instead of properly re-rendering them with edited 3D models, they did crappy copy-paste jobs on the rendered graphics.
