Interesting.
I was just looking up RTS engines a few days before New Year's, and stumbled upon this.
The fact that it's apparently 3D-emphatic (makes no mention of 2D in the About) turned me off, though, as I prefer 2D. (and finding a 2D engine took me about 30 more seconds, though I have no idea as to quality...)

Well honestly, the math behind 3D engines is mostly 2D or a very simple extension of 2D; the only things that are totally 3D in concept are the graphics. So you could probably use a 3D engine and then just do everything with 2D graphics on a 2D plane. I'm unsure as to how difficult this would be if you have limited programming experience, but it's a possibility. Just a thought.

[Edit] (This is actually what a lot of indie developers do nowadays, as 2D engines limit the types of graphics that can be displayed, whereas a 3D engine won't)

While this is what I would assume...
1. A 2D engine is likely to be more optimized for a game with 2D graphics.
2. I can't explain what the exact difference I'm seeing/feeling is, and therefore don't know if it's a matter of the engine, game design, being 3D or what else, but in general all/nearly all 3D games I've played or seen seem clunky. And if I don't know what the source of the problem is, then the simplest way to avoid it is to avoid the subject entirely.
3. Unless I were to get into any of them (which is by very far a lesser chance), it's a moot point entirely. I can be as wrong as I like, if it's about a subject which does not relate to me.

You can still use 2d sprites.

I'd code it myself if I were you. Unless you're intent on doing something very fancy or else in 3d you should at least attempt to roll your own engine, first. Or otherwise you already know what you're doing, in which case this topic is irrelevant.

This.

Also, a word of warning: The Spring community is extremely hostile to newcomers, and the game's scripting language is really hard to learn.

NudeRaider -- EUD actions, specifically. The conditions remained. Today we can even have actions again, but they're all virtualized/whitelisted (not sure on the actual technical implementation) so you can only use them for specific intended purposed, not arbitrary code injections.

NudeRaider -- I mean yes, maps - through EUDs - were theoretically able to do that as well, but that was patched quickly.

not the map, the editor

Symmetry -- I vaguely remember Voy doing some ACE back in the day, but I had no idea EUDs could do that kind of shit. I am very much catching up on the technology

yeah an editor that isn't allowed to write files sounds rather pointless, so I'd assume it can. Like most other programs too btw. and yes, obviously that's dangerous, but also kinda necessary. MS introduced that virtualization for exactly that reason.

Ultraviolet -- I don't think so. I think they shut that shit down after 1.16, maybe even earlier
